Chapter 15

“Hey, I thought you were sick.” Trent walks through the back door, surprising me in his garden.

“So did I… turned out it was just a headache.” I shrug. “What did I miss?” I turn to look at him.

“Oh, nothing much… just the usual…” I could tell he was hiding something but I cannot be bothered asking what. “What are you doing out here? It’s getting dark.”

“Nothing...” I sigh, “A bit home-sick I guess.”

“Really?” He asks, “Speaking of, you haven’t really told me a lot about your home? Or even your family.”

“Trust me they’re not that exciting.” I smile.

“I doubt that.” I don’t reply. “But seriously,” he joins my side. I can see he’s still in his uniform. He probably took off the jacket and tie inside. “I have no idea about your life… whereas you seem to know pretty much everything about me.”

“Not everything.”

“Fine then, don’t tell me. I’ll just meet them myself when we go tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow’s the ball.” I say,

“Yeah but we can still go in the morning.” I almost laugh.

“My family is not like that.” I smile.

“What do you mean?”

“They move around a lot.” I lie. He looks as if he’s waiting or me to continue. “They… they’re overseas at the moment.”

“Oh yeah? Where?”

“Last I heard they were in Canada.”

“Canada? What I they doing there?” He puts his hands into his pockets.

“I have an uncle there.” He nods.

“Any siblings?”

“An older brother. He’s at college though.”

“Where?”

“Melbourne.” The only truth I’ve said about my family. We stand there a little while, staring at the sky. Different shades of yellow, orange and pink turn it into a work of art.

“Wanna go inside?” He asks.

I nod, “it’s getting a bit cold.” I wrap my arms around myself.
