KEITH

Unable to tear my eyes away I stared at the boy before me. My heart lurched into my throat as he smiled down at me.

"You gonna sit there all day?" He snorted raising a thin brow.

He helped me to my feet and glanced at the wolf by my side.

"Who's this little guy?" He smiled looking a little apprehensive.

"A stray wolf I rescued." I shrugged.

He gave me a blank stare before blinking at me like I had six heads.

"What?" I asked feeling self conscious.

"You have a pet wolf?!" He all but shouted jumping back grabbing at his brown hair.

"He's not a pet. He can leave if he wishes." I shrugged indifferent.

"Soo cool." The boy spoke softly. So low I wasn't sure I had heard it.

"What's his name?" He asked smiling.

"He doesn't have one. Again he isn't a pet." I crossed my arms over my chest studying the boy before me.

"What? He has to have a name." He mimicked my actions and crossed his arms over his chest.

"He doesn't. And speaking of names- what's yours?" I raised a brow.

"Oh yeah. The name is Lance. Lance McClain. Pleasure to meet me, I know. What's your name Mullet?" He smirked running his fingers through his short hair shooting me a flirtatious smile that for some strange reason felt like a physical blow to my chest.

What is up with this guy?

"My name is Keith Kogane."

Lance's handsome face dropped as he cocked his head to the side. His deep blue eyes narrowed in my direction as he scrutinized my face.

"What?" I snapped feeling even more self conscious.

"Kogane? Are you related to Shiro?" Lance asked stepping back to take me on completely. His blue eyes skimmed up and down my body.

My stomach lurched inside of me. Besides feeling completely exposed, I felt a wave of relief wash over me.

This guy knows Shiro?!

"He's my brother, do you know him?
Have you seen him? Is he here?" With each question I closed the distance between us.

Lance held his hands up.

"Easy there Mullet. Shiro isn't here. I haven't seen him in months. I'm a cadet from Garrison.

We were being sent home for summer vacation when-" Lance's voice trailed off. His eyes took on a somber and an all too familiar look.

Before the undead took over and wiped out half of our population.

I nodded in understanding.

Dammit.

"Are you here by yourself?" I asked.

Lance rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly.

"Oh yeah. We should probably head back before they begin to worry. They may think I got eaten or something. Come with me." Lance grinned pointing with the flashlight.

I glanced at the wolf beside me and patted my thigh signaling him to follow. We followed Lance down the long empty corridor.

Back when things were normal I had only been in an emergency exit once during a false alarm at the mall. The halls had been kind of creepy like something out of a horror film.
