Waiting. Waiting. Waiting. That's all we did for two hours. It was 1:30, and me and Ponyboy have been silently watching tv for the last two hours. None of us talked, but I could tell we were both stressing about Soda. His knee is either fractured or broken, and he is with Darry. Yeah, today could have gone better. I would have said it couldn't have been worse, but just a couple months ago I was at two of the gangs funeral, so it could. Then, the phone rang. "Hello?" I heard Ponyboy say dully into the phone. "No he's not back yet." He asked, and I could guess what Steve was saying. "Obviously not, or else I'm sure he'd tell you." Ponyboy said aggravated. I smirked, as it was less than a year ago when Steve was sitting next to Ponyboy when he was asleep in the hospital, not sleeping for at least 24 hours. In his words, he was "only there for Soda." but I could argue that. And here they are, arguing over the phone. I was snapped out of my slight reverie as Ponyboy slammed the phone down. "He's such an annoyance sometimes. Actually, all the time." Ponyboy growled, and I laughed. "What?" He asked, sinking down into the couch again. "You do realize that just a few months ago Steve was in the hospital for at least 24 hours waiting for you?" I smirked, and he rolled his eyes. "Believe me, I've made fun of him for it enough." He said and I grinned. He was funny when he wanted to be. "So, Whatcha wanna do why we wait?" I asked him, and he shrugged. "They should hopefully not be home to much longer, it's been two hours." Ponyboy said. I nodded, and we both settled into the couch, determined to wait this out. ~ Then, I heard a car door slam. I knew Pony heard it too, because he looked at me with pure excitement on his face, before running out the door. Glory, the kid acts like Sodas never been at the hospital before. But, this is pretty bad. I ran out after him, almost on his tail. Glory the kids fast. I let the door slam behind me, and we raced over to the truck. I saw Darry opening the passenger door as I skidded to a stop beside Pony. "What happened? Is he ok?" Ponyboy asked, panicked once again. "His knees broken." I heard Darry mumble, and Ponyboy had a sharp intake of breath beside me. "Knew it." I murmured.
Sodas POV
I looked at the large, annoying, and about 50 pound cast on my leg. I just wish this would have never happened. Why did I have to go to the stupid rumble?! None of this would have happened if I would have just listened to Dar and not go to that rumble. I heard Ponyboy say "What happened? Is he ok?" He shouldn't have to worry about me. "His knees broken." Darry mumbled from in front of me, and I groaned. As if I needed a reminder. The stupid white plaster cast won't go away for at least 6 weeks. Which means I'm vulnerable to socs for at least 6 WEEKS. I grabbed the crutches from the back seat, the crutches! I'm not gonna be able to walk and have to use crutches!! Ugh. I got out, (more like toppled out) of the truck. Darry moved out of the way as I grabbed my, ugh my, crutches. "You ok?" TwoBit asked, walking over to me. "Yep." I mumbled, crutching past them all and into the house. TwoBit and Ponyboy were right behind me, with Darry trailing behind. I flopped onto the couch. TwoBit hesitantly sat down next to me. "Are you are you're ok?" He asked, looking at my leg. As if I didn't need a reminder. "I'm helpless." I mumbled, and I saw Ponyboy give me a concerned look from where he was standing on the other side of me. "What?" TwoBit asked as Dar walked in. "I can't do nothing! I can't fight, I can't work on cars, and I can't even walk!" I exclaimed, slamming my head against the back of the couch. "I'm sure you'll be fine after a while." Ponyboy tried to calm me, but it didn't work. "After a while! That's like, forever from now." I complained, rolling my eyes. TwoBit put his hand on my shoulder, and I looked at him. "You're gonna be ok. You just gotta get used to it." He said, and Ponyboy nodded. "Yeah, and it's not like you'll have to fight. Steve won't let anybody get five feet near you." Ponyboy laughed, and then said, "Oh, that reminds me, Steve needs you to call him or else he's gonna have a anxiety attack." Ponyboy said, completely serious. "True." I stretched my hand out, as if I was trying to reach the phone. "I can't reach it! I can't even get to the phone!" I exclaimed, and TwoBit rolled his eyes. "Then get up." He said, and I sighed. I grabbed my crutches, and stood up. I got over to the phone, and dialed the number to the DX. Somebody picked up on the second ring. "Hello?" Steve said dully into the phone. "Hey." I said, and I could almost hear him perk up. "What happened? Tell me everything." He demanded, and I sighed. "Well, first I got attached by socs, then Darry-" I heard him hiss at the name. "Drove me to the hospital, then the stupid nurse told me I broke my knee and gave me a stupid cast, and now I'm here." I finished. "Well, what happened during the car ride?" He asked, and I glanced to my left, where Darry was standing. "I'll tell you later. How much longer till you get off work?" I asked, aware that everybody was staring at me. "Ummm, I don't know, you know how boss man changes it all the time. Hold on." He said, and then I heard shifting in the other line. A minute or so later, his voice returned. "He said it's slow today, so I can get off in a half an hour." Good. "Ok good. Bye." I said. "I want to know everything that happens in the car. Bye." He said quickly, and then hung up. I just stood there. I didn't want to turn around, for some reason. I heard, what I guessed was TwoBit and Pony, have a whispered conversation. I slowly turned around. Everybody was still staring at me. I, as slow as my crutches could take me, walked back over to the sofa, and sunk down onto it. "Alright, so me and the kid have to go... do homework... and we can't do it here. Welp, sorry fellas, gotta go." He said, and he slowly inches away from me, before him and Ponyboy stood up. "Are you serious? You're gunna leave me here?" I asked in shock. "Homework, ya know? Gotta keep steady D's." TwoBit said, and him and Ponyboy ran out the door. "I hate you Keith." I mumbled, as I banged my head again on the back of the couch. Darry was still just standing there, looking at me. I wished he would look anywhere but me. I wished I could be anywhere but here right now. But, lady much seems to hate our gang, so... I forced myself to look at Dar. "Thanks." I said, in what I was hoping wouldn't sound as horrible as I felt. He looked taken aback. "For what?" He asked, in a truly shocked voice. "For helping me today." I explained, and he nodded. "No problem." He said, and he finally looked away from me. Honestly, it's like I'm some famous pop star. Darry sighed, and it sounded as if he wanted to say something.
TwoBits POV
"You have such amazing ideas." Ponyboy said as we ran from the house. I laughed. "And yet you listen to me." I smirked. "I have a question. Why did we leave?" Ponyboy asked, and I stopped running. He followed quickly. "Because, once again, it's to escape either there fighting, or escape there awkwardness." I explained. He nodded. "I really hope it's the latter." He said in a strained voice. "Me too." I said.
