Not even 5 five seconds before I opened the door, Darry was hollering at me. "What the heck happened?" He screeched as he looked at my face. My lip was bloody, there was a cut on my forehead, and I could feel my eye swelling. "I got jumped." I mumble, staring at my feet. I didn't understand why he was so mad at me. "Every soc within a twenty mile radius wants you dead." He growled, "What did I say about walking alone?" I gaped at him. He thinks I was alone. Even if I tell him I wasn't he probably won't believe me. "Why can't you use your head?" He was yelling now. I don't know why I was just standing there. "I wasn't alone." I murmured. "You know I don't speak mumble, Ponyboy." He said coldly. I sighed. "I wasn't alone." I said louder. He stopped. "You weren't?" Wow that was easier than I thought. "TwoBit was with me. We were walking home from school and the got us at the lot. He chased the socs after. I just walked back. You know you can let me talk before yelling at me." I mumbled the last part before walking into me and Soda room. Suddenly I heard the door slam. I walked into the kitchen and saw TwoBit. He didn't look as bad as me though he was sporting a black eye like crown. "Where's Darry?" I shrugged. I just assumed he was still in here. "The Socs called another rumble!" He exclaimed, looking excited. "Yeah, and last time they said they would stay out of our neighborhood, but they didn't. So this time if they don't, we'll just call the fuzz." As he was saying that, Darry walked in. "Another rumble?" He said in shock. "We can't go. The state has really been on my back lately, and if we go to that rumble, Ponyboy could get thrown in a boys home." I sighed. The socs would outnumber us if we didn't come. We would just have to depend on Tim's gang. TwoBit frowned, but nodded. He understood what troubles we went through. "It's tonight. They said it was a 'non preparation rumble' or something." He drew air quotes. "Do Steve and Soda know?" I asked as I perched on top of the table. "I told them before I came here. They both seemed excited. In Soda words, 'We'll just have to cream them again, because Dally and Johnny are there fault'." Darry frowned at these words. He hated telling us we couldn't do things, if we were this excited to do it. Darry turned to me. "I have work in an hour. I should leave, we are behind schedule. I'll wait till Soda gets home." He looked away. "I should go get ready. I'll see y'all after the rumble." He did a front flip off our front steps, and walked away. Darry looked at me. "I'm sorry. I should have listened to you before yelling." "It alright." Suddenly, the door banged open. "Hey Dar. Hey Ponyboy." He greeted, throwing his shoes. "You can't go to the rumble tonight." Darry said, in the way of his greeting? I guess. Soda looked taken aback. "What?" He asked. I felt bad. He was really excited to end those socs. "The state will never let it go. There already on our backs since..." He trailed off, but I knew what he was talking about. We never really brought up the night they died. "Of course." Soda mumbled angrily, before walking into our bedroom. "I'm going to work." I walked into me and Sodas bedroom. He was pacing the small space. "I want to whip those socs." He said with finality. "Where's Darry?" I sat down on the bed. "Went to work." I answered him. "What time did he say he would be back?" What was this? A talk show? "I don't know. Whenever he leaves at this time, he's back by like 9." Oh god.... he's not thinking of..... "I'm going to that rumble tonight. I want to end those socs for hurting you." No. No. No. "Darry's going to kill you." I said immediately, no doubt in my mind, that if it was me, they should start burying a hole. Soda only laughed. "He only does what mom and dad have done to us. And has mom or dad ever killed us?" He asked in mock seriousness. I answered in a low voice. "Has mom and dad ever hit us?" He stopped laughing. "Ponyboy, please. He was stressed, you came home two hours past your curfew, and fell asleep in the lot. I'm going to come home by 2:00, my curfew. Please don't worry." He pleaded. I looked at him. "Please don't go. Darry is going to pester me the entire time. If I lie to Darry he'll skin me." He sighed. "Say you went out to watch the sunset, and when you came back I was gone. I have to go, it starts in an hour and me and Steve are gonna drink some. See you later." He waved as he left the room, and I heard the door slam shut. Glory. You can never hide anything from Darry. I mean, seriously. I headed into the kitchen and looked at the clock. 7:00. Two hours until Darry would be home. I decided to read until he returned. 2 hours later. "Hey Pony." Darry greeted as he stepped into the living room to me sprawled out on the couch. "Where's Soda?" He asked suspiciously. I shrugged. "I went out to watch the sunset, and when I came back he was gone." I said automatically. Darry rolled his eyes. "I ain't believing that crap. He's at the rumble, ain't he?" He said as if he was having a conversation over weather. "I don't know." I said again. He sat down on his favorite armchair, and flipped through the channels. I knew he didn't believe me. 4 hours later.
Sodas POV:
Oh god. I never thought about the injuries. Darry will obviously know I was at the rumble. I shrugged it off. What's the worse that can happen? "See y'all later." I said as I walked up my steps, bracing myself. I opened the door.
Ponyboys POV
I heard the door creak open, and so did Darry. He was at the door in a second. Soda had his head down. Oh my gosh I forgot about injuries! The most obvious part. "Where have you been? You didn't even tell Ponyboy!" He asked, though there was an edge to his voice. Sodas didn't respond so Darry lifted his chin up. His eyes turned to stone. "You were at the rumble, weren't you?" He said it as more of a statement than a question. Oh god. I better start digging a hole. Soda sighed, mumbled nonsense, and nodded. He's going to skin him alive. He dropped his hand. "So, going to a rumble is more important than keeping us together?" He asked. Soda mumbled something like "no." "I told you you couldn't go to the rumble, not for my own enjoyment, but because the state has been on us a lot! You think I don't want you to go so you can suffer?" He questioned. I felt bad for Soda. He looked beat up enough as it was. "Darry...." he began but Darry cut him off. "Why don't you use your head? You brother was here, watching the sunset, and you take off!" He was yelling now, which was surprising because he only ever yelled at me. "Go to your room." He commanded. Soda took strides to our room, and I just watched, mouth open. I got up. "Don't think about going in there." He growled. "What? Am I not aloud to sleep? Its one am." I asked back at him. He sighed. "Tell Soda to go in my room. I'll be in there in a minute." I knew that I wasn't going to be able to sleep. He was about to lose his voice with all the screaming he was going to do. I shuffled into our room, and saw Soda in the bed, with his head in his hands. "Soda?" I questioned in a quiet voice. He lifted his head. "Yeah? What, does Darry want to scream at me some more?" He asked, and his eyes were bright. "He wants you to go into his bedroom. So I can sleep or something like that." As soda got up I heard him mumble, "Darry might actually kill me." I didn't blame him for thinking like that one bit.
