It was about eight in the evening and Alison sat in the living room on the couch, bottle feeding Esmaè who just woke up from sleeping most of the day, while I messed around with the tv as no sound seemed to be coming out even though the volume was on twenty. At times I hated technology.

"Em, come here a second" Ali said so I put the remote down and wondered over to my girls taking a set next to them, as Ali feed her.

"What's up?"

"She just slept but look she's getting tired again, and she never gets tired during feeds" Alison states.

After Esmaè finished feeding I took her from my fiancé and put her against my chest giving her back a gentle pat. Only to feel her small chest heving rapidly against mine. Babies breath fast anyway but she's never been like this it was almost like she couldn't keep up with herself.

"Sweetie I think somethings wrong, she shouldn't be breathing this fast. It's not in any of the baby books I read" Ali noticed too with a hand running along Esmaè's back.

"I'll ring the doctor" she said pratically shooting up from the couch we were sat on, running to grab the phone from the other room, then coming back into the living room, she began to dial giving the doctor a run down of our daughters symptoms when they answered.

While Ali was on the phone I ran my finger down my daughters cheek feeling how clammy her skin was suddenly.

"She's still breathing rapidly yes.. Ok yeah, thank you so much" Alison hung up the phone, putting it on the coffee table and turned to me from her spot standing in front of the couch.

"The lady on the phone said to take her to the hospital immediately" Alison said in a panicked tone.

....

We were in a nice private room of the children's hospital with Esmaè asleep, she just had some more blood taken. I was thankful she was asleep now, poor thing seemed to of had her fair share of tests done in last hour and a half.

"How is she doing?" Nurse Jane asks, she'd been looking after Esmaè since we got here about three hours ago now, she was amazing to myself and Alison too, calming us down when we started to panic.

I look down at my daughter in her hospital crib. And just like a hospital bed, it doesn't look very comfy. But she doesn't seem to mind she's peacefully sleeping, probably to tired to stay awake what with all the doctors shes had prodding and poking her over the past few hours.

"She's alright, finally cried herself to sleep I think" Ali tells her with a chuckle.

"Well I just popped in to tell you the doctor will be round in a few minutes with the test results" Nurse Jane sent us a smile. I can only imagine what we must of looked like to her, stressed parents who haven't slept I would imagine, because that's what we were.

Saying our thanks she left us alone again in our room. It was silent apart from the low beeping sound coming from a machine they had Esmaè hooked up to, I didn't know what it was for.

Ali leans on the rail of the crib on the opposite side of me. Leaning on the rail too, I run my hand through my daughters small tuffed of hair lightly so I don't disturb her sleep.

"She looks so cute when she sleeps" I say in a whisper still running my hand over her head gently. My hand looks massive compared to her small head in it.

Ali smiles down at the baby putting her hand on Esmaè's belly, rubbing her thumb back and fourth over our daughters covered tummy "Yeah I know. Kind of reminds me of you as a baby, your mom showed me a few photos" she lightly said. "You both look so alike when you sleep"
