To make a difference, all you have to do is care. Loving someone who has been damaged isn't easy. But who said love was easy? You have to be patient for they are in pain. Your arms have to be as open as your heart because they've had a trauma, a heartbreaking past, or even both.
You have to be kind for this person may shut you out at first. In that moment, you must remember all the hurt that person has been through. Then recognize that this is no more than a tactic to protect their broken heart.
When it comes to loving them, you must always protect them by being there when they need you most. You must preserve the love you hold for them so they can learn to let the walls down and love you back. Remember that even though you may help the wound heal, the scar will always be there. Just know that the bond will be stronger than ever.
This is a bond I hope to build with a little girl when I finally am able to adopt. I know it won't be easy, but it'll be worth it. In the end, I hope to make as much of a difference in her life as I know she will in mine.
