My fingertips flew across the keyboard as I sat at my desk working. My eyes went between the two computer screens before I pushed the back button with force. I huffed heavily stressed by wanting the article to good enough and done by my deadline. I was so overwhelmed by the stress that I was stripped from reality. My mind was so consumed by my work that I nearly jumped up from seat when I felt someone tap my shoulder. I turned around in my office chair to find my grinning co-worker and friend, Chad. He held two paper bags in his hands. My eyebrow rose in question as I met his eyes once again. "What's this about?" I asked leaning back in my chair.
"Well, I figured, since I missed your birthday celebration, I could make it up to you and bring you lunch," Chad said handing me a bag and placing the other on my desk He pulled the chair from a co-worker's desk that had left for lunch and took a seat in it. Afterwards, he wasted no time pulling a burger from the brown bag he sat on my desk earlier and unwrapping it.
"Oh thanks," I said with a grin as I opened up my own bag pulling out a greasy fry. French fries were the best. "I can't believe it's been a whole month since I turned twenty-four." I popped the fry into my mouth and smiled as I chewed away at the deliciousness.
Chad chuckled as he swallowed the bite of burger he had taken a few moments ago. "Hey. Time flies when you're having fun Besides, you could be thirty like me."
I sighed. "I'm not that far off though. One day, I'll just blink my eyes and I'll be thirty. And yet, I still feel like my life is incomplete, you know. Like I'm missing something." I trailed off before grabbing a few fries this time before popping them in my mouth. Food was my comfort when I started feeling down. It was a surprise I wasn't extremely overweight but instead had a curvy thick body figure.
"I totally understand what you mean. Sometimes, you don't know what you're missing until it's too late. It could be sitting right in front of you." My eyebrows nearly met as I stared at him in confusion. A question fell in mind so I swallowed quickly so I could find the answer from him.
"What do you-" Before I could finish my question, I was immediately cut off by Chad crushing his lips against mine and I quickly pushed him away. I was stunned and confused by the sudden approach. "What the hell, Chad!"
He sat back into the office chair with a look of surprise on his face. Was he really that surprised that I pushed him off me? "I just thought- I just figured- I mean I thought our friendship was blossoming into more," Chad somewhat stuttered trying to explain his actions.
I didn't think I had led him on like that. I mean, he was an awesome friend, but I didn't see him as anything more because I was even given a chance to try to see it that way. I shook my head softly. "Chad, you're a cool friend, but you didn't even tell me you liked me like that or that you wanted to pursue me. You just jumped right in so it took me for a shock. Why don't we take one step at a time and see where things go from there," I offered. I thought it sounded fair. I wasn't ready for a relationship.
Not yet anyway. Chad eyes narrowed though as if he didn't like the idea. He shook his head confirming my suspicion. "All you girls are alike. You only want the guys who treat you like crap. You never want to give the nice guys a chance," he hissed throwing his burger into the paper bag and jumping up from his seat. He marched off and I immediately was out of my seat.
"Chad wait!" I cried out not wanting to lose a friendship over a misunderstanding. It irritated me guys never wanted to work for something. They thought they deserved it so they either threw away friendships or bully their way into your life. I just wanted something different. Was that too much to ask.
As I took a step forward with the intentions to run after him, my body felt weak and my vision went blurry. It felt as if all stress was coming down on me at once. It was then that I fell on the ground hard and was out as a light.

"Louise, please be okay," I heard a groggy low voice. I tried to move my hands so I could sit up, but they felt so heavy and my body ache.
I could hear a bit more murmuring and I tried to strain my ears to listen. "She'll be fine," was all I could make up. What in the world happened? That was a pondering question that I couldn't get an answer to unless I made myself get up and asked.
So, I slowly forced my eyes open despite them feeling heavy and looked around. I blinked a couple of times trying to focus my eyesight. It was then I realized I wasn't wearing my glasses. "I can't see," I said. My throat felt dry and my voice sounded a bit cracked.
I saw a blurry figure move closer. "It's because they took off your glasses," a familiar voice said. They placed the glasses back on my face. As I pushed them a bit farther back onto my face I realized it was Kitty who stood by my side with the female doctor.
I smiled and nodded softly. "Thanks," I replied. I pulled myself up and leaned back in the bed before turning my attention toward the doctor. "What happened to me?" I looked around the hospital room still trying to comprehend the situation. "And why am I in a hospital?"
"You don't remember?" the doctor asked.
I searched my memory trying to remember any events that would have made me end up in the hospital. I finally shook my head after coming up empty handed. "Sorry, I don't Dr-" I trailed off as I realized that she hadn't given me her name.
"I'm sorry. My name is Dr. Anderson. It seems you fainted. It could be from stress, but I'm not for sure because I'm waiting on your tests to come back. Speaking of which, they should be back right about now. I'll go check the status." With that, Dr. Anderson had wormed her way out of the hospital room shutting the door behind her.
"You seriously don't remember anything?" Kitty asked once we were alone. I looked up at her and shrugged.
"All I remember is having a discussion with Chad. He had brought me a lunch to make up for missing my birthday. Which I thought was sweet until he tried to kiss me. It just honestly caught me off guard. He wasn't happy about it though and was gone without a second thought. I tried to go after him so we could sort things out, but-" I stopped as I tried to search my memory once again only for it to come up blank. I exhaled heavily. "That's all I remember. Between that and waking up here, everything just comes up blank unfortunately. How long have I've been out anyway?"
Kitty pulled out her phone to look at the time, I guess. "About an hour," she answered as she slid it back in her pocket.
Before I could ask anymore questions, a knock came upon the door. A few seconds went by before I realized they were waiting for permission to enter the room. "Come in," I said.
Dr. Anderson had entered the room holding a clipboard in her hand. She made sure to close the door behind her before making her way to the bed. She took a deep breath. "Your tests come back," she said in a low voice.
"Is it bad?" I asked afraid of the test results. My hands clinched the thin like blanket as my heart thumped heavily against my chest. Was I endangered? Why did she leave me hanging? I hated cliff hangers. Especially when it came to my life.
"It seems that you are pregnant, Ms. Davis."
