Love is a scary thing because it can always come to an end. Loving someone is a huge risk that we choose to take. It had been a risk to open my arms and even my heart for Amora. But, even though the time was short and temporary, I couldn't technically say I regretted the opportunity of having her in my life even for a moment. I didn't want to say goodbye.
But, Amora being happy was my top priority even if it meant it wasn't with me. So, I decided to make our last moments together special. I had let her choose where we would spend today and she had said the zoo without a second thought. So, her wish my command.
The smile on her face as she let the goat eat out of hand warmed my heart. Her being at piece made me feel a lot better. It's probably why when I went to go check on her last night because I couldn't sleep, that my mind settled. She had slept peacefully tucked in her bed holding the teddy bear I had bought her.
"There you are." I glanced up to see Kitty making her way over to me and having a seat on the bench with me. It didn't surprise me she had shown up because I had called her last night after checking up on Amora to vent. She wasn't shocked Leo wasn't there. It hadn't been his idea though. It was mine. I had thought I wanted to be alone, but, the truth was, I was unsure of how I had been feeling. Kitty could tell this was really hard on me, so she had promised to keep me company after she had gotten off work.
"You found us," I responded turning my attention back towards Amora. I knew it wouldn't have been that hard since I told her where we were when she texted saying she was off work and pulling into the zoo's parking lot.
"I still can't believe it," Kitty began as I took a photo of Amora now feeding a pig. It was among a handful of photos that I had taken of her today. "She can't just take her away from you."
I took a deep breath. I knew Kitty was in my corner, but it wasn't helping. "I don't want her to go either, but the judge's word is final."
"There's got to be something you can do," Kitty hissed not ready to back down. She was more of a warrior than me however. I was tired of fighting a non-winning battle. Besides, it wasn't about me. It was about Amora.
"It's okay," I replied trying to hint I didn't really want to talk about it right now as I watched Amora walk over to a baby duck.
"Can't Leo do anything? He's a lawyer." I knew she was just trying to help, but the fact of the matter was, Amora was excited about this move. Who was I to keep her from her family if there was a chance this could work? I still feared of something bad happening to her like Nikita. But, in the end, she not only got away from her mom, her younger siblings were saved from her mother before they could experience the same fate as she did in the beginning.
I gave Kitty a reassuring soft smile. "It's okay. Amora's happiness is all that matters to me. Even if it's not with me."
I did my best trying to mask my emotions while holding back my tears. I tried focusing on Amora because right at that moment she was the light of my eye and I was afraid that losing her would make me fall back into the darkness I've been able to escape.
It was then I questioned why I had to run into Leo. Ever since I had met him, it felt like I was feeling the same things all over again since I had tried to box up my feelings two years ago.
Amora was holding the duck and she waved to me as I took her photo. Amora turned her back to go feed another goat from the bag of food she carried around just when a tear rolled down my cheek. I was unsure what I would do without her or where I would go from here.
