angst and sadness ahead (you have been warned)

———

Violet sprinted through the raider's camp, dodging flames that littered the ground. She locked eyes onto Ruby, who was fighting off a couple of walkers nearby. Her hope lasted only for a second before a raider shot the southern-girl in the head, blood spurting from the gaping whole in her forehead. Ruby's eyes rolled back in her head before falling to her knees, then to her face.

Violet covered her mouth to muffle her gasp. She blinked a couple of times, holding in tears. "I have to keep moving," She told herself, tearing her gaze away from her friend's lifeless corpse.

She kept running, only stopping to hide from what was left of the raiders. Walkers flooded the camp grounds, taking out the ranks one by one.

She looked around frantically, hoping to her friends. Well, what was left of them. She coughed harshly, fire souring the air with smoke and ash. She covered her mouth with her sleeve, trying her best not to inhale any of it.

"Clem! Louis! AJ!" She yelled, trying to raise her voice over the crackle of the flames. Something, or someone, grabbed the back of her jacket, forcing whatever clean oxygen she had left out of her. She gasped for air, only to be met with a mouthful of smoke. She coughed, trying to break free of whatever was holding her. The man slapped his hand over her mouth.

"Vi! Where are you!?" A  raspy voice yelled back. Clementine.

She bit down hard on the man's hand, causing him to yank it away. "Over he-!"

"Stupid bitch!" The man muttered, punching her in the stomach. She buckled over in pain, allowing the man to pull her towards the cells. She searched the ground frantically for anything she could use to get away from this guy. Something caught her eye; a knife, setting beside a crate.

She elbowed the guy in the groin, using her weight to push against him. Thrown off balance, the hold he had on her loosened, allowing her to get a grip on the knife. She turned around, ready to face her attacker, taken aback when he was already there, a wild bloodthirsty look in his eyes.

The sick of the blade cutting through flesh was the only thing Violet heard before she felt the sharp, hot sting in her side.

She screamed in pain, catching the attention of whoever or whatever was around. The man laughed maniacally. "I've got you now you idiotic-"

"Get the fuck away from her!"

Clementine appeared, kneeing the man in the stomach, causing him to keel over in pain. She brought her knife down onto his skull, killing him instantly.

Violet coughed painfully, gripping her side and hoping to stem the bleeding. "Clem-" She said weakly.

"Oh my god." Clementine said, dropping to the ground in front of Violet. She took the blonde's face in her hands. "You're gonna be okay. You're gonna be okay."

Clementine seemed to be saying it more for herself than for Violet. Clementine's vision blurred with tears. One of the last people she loved was dying, and she couldn't do anything about it.

Violet's vision shifted to the walker that was stumbling towards them. "Move." She said, barely a whisper.

"What?" Clementine replied, confused.

"Move."  Violet grunted, knocking the brunette out of the way before kicking the walker in the knee. She took a breath to regain a sliver of strength before sicking the knife into the walker's skull. Now she couldn't tell if the blood on her hands was the walker's or hers.

She leaned back again, coughing from the blood filling her lungs and the smoke. Her vision blurred, before she grunted, sitting up, a new determination lighting within her. "Help me up."

"But you can't-"

"Help me up, Clementine." She said with force, obviously not taking no for an answer.

Clementine put her arm underneath her. Violet suppressed a yelp of pain, trying not to lean on Clementine too much.

"Violet-"

"No."

"Violet, lean on me."

"I can walk-"

Violet groaned in agony as another flash of pain coursed through her, falling to her knees and clutching her side. Blood pooled on the ground beside her, mixing with the burnt soil. Her vision swam, black dots appearing and becoming bigger as they covered her line of eyesight. She coughed up blood, the crimson liquid sour in her mouth.

"Violet!" A male voice yelled urgently, afraid that he'd lost his friend to the walkers.

"Clementine! Clem, where are you!?" Another voice yelled, much shriller than the first.

"AJ, Louis, over here!" Clem yelled back, only to cough as more smoke got into her lungs.

Louis appeared with a smile on his face. Immediately his face fell, horrified at the condition his friend was in. "No........" He said, not believing what he was seeing. Tears started to stream down his face, making streaks where they cleaned the ash on his cheeks. He ran to where Violet was lying, dropping to his knees. "No..."

"Louis-" She tried to get the boy's attention.

"You can't die-"

"Louis-"

"You're not going to fucking die-"

"Get Clem and AJ out. Where's everyone else?"

Louis shook his head.

"Tenn? Aasim? Omar?"

"They're all gone, Vi."

Violet frowned slightly, blood dribbling from the corner of her mouth. "Get Clem and AJ out." She repeated.

"What about you?"

"Don't worry about me, just get them out." She finalized, fully accepting that she wasn't making it out of there alive. The smoke was getting thicker by the second, and

Another tear escaped from Louis's eyes. Violet smiled at him. "I'll miss you, you asshole." She said playfully, meaning every word.

Louis managed to smile at the blonde's attempt at a joke.

"Clem......?"

Clementine swiveled her head to see AJ, who was staring at Violet, confused. "Is Violet....?"

Violet managed to smile at the boy. "Just a scratch, little man." She quietly chuckled, which was cut short by another painful cough.

"Louis..........can you give us a minute?" Clementine asked, obviously wanting to be alone with Violet. Louis understood, a sob breaking free from him before he stood up, walking over to AJ and explaining what was going on.

The smoke became more intense. And so did the heat from the flames. Violet coughed harder, specks of blood appearing beside her hand.

Violet shakily brought her hand to the back of Clementine's neck, leaning up so her forehead was resting on her girlfriend's. "Teach AJ how to use a bow for me, alright? Louis, too. He needs practice."

Clementine laughed a little at her joke.

"I love you. So much." The blonde whispered, only for Clementine to hear. "You know that, right?"

Clementine managed a smile through her tears. "I love you too, you dork. To the moon and back."

The corner of Violet's mouth turned upward into a half-grin. She felt her breathing become shallower as darkness swallowed her vision. She began to lose feeling in her body, blood pouring from the wound faster. A shrill ringing sound filling her ears like church bells, drowning out almost everything.

Everything except Clementine's words.

"To the moon and back."
