Chapter 23

Jason's POV

I followed closely behind Harry as we walked out to the quidditch field. Piper was by my side, holding my hand. Almost everyone came. Percy and Hazel almost decided against it, although they decided to go, just to watch of course. And if worst comes to worst, they'd only hover for a second or two on the broomstick. I was confused about Percy, why he wouldn't want to do this, because he rides on Blackjack all the time and he never get's blasted out of the sky. Although Annabeth answered for him when I asked.

"His father created horses." Of course, that was the only answer she gave to me, because I walked away before she could get into the details. Hermione and Ron were with us too, I guess it's just for support. Only Harry's on the quidditch team anyways. They claimed that they just like to watch from the stands. We walked into the field to find Madam Hootch standing there, waiting for us. She nodded to Harry who walked over to sit in the stands and watch us. Before Harry left I grabbed his arm, tugging him closer. He jumped, surprised I grabbed him and turned to face me.

"What is she going to teach us?" I asked, they usually only learn one thing, right? It's how to stay on a broom. I think.

"She's going to explain the rules of quidditch, the balls, and then how to actually fly." He said tugging his arm free from my grip. I let go and he ran to sit next to Hermione and Ron in the stands. I took my place next to an old broom, closest to Madam Hootch. The first thing I noticed was a giant trunk in the middle of the field.

"Good Afternoon." Madam Hootch said studying every one of us. Fortunately she did not to notice the three empty spots, where they thought Hazel, Percy, and Nico would be. "Welcome to your first flying lesson." She nodded to all of us, Clarisse grunted. "First, we'll talk about quidditch. There are three hoops at the end of the field, on each side." She started pointing at the hoops. "There is one ball, called the quaffle." She opened the chest, revealing three balls. Two of the three were fighting against chains that held them down, like they had a mind of their own. Those two balls were jet-black, round, and made of iron. She picked up the ball in the middle, it had a spherical shape and could be easily gripped. She turned to us. "This is called a quaffle, as you can see, it can be easily gripped, so the players can hold it. It has been enchanted so it will fall down slower, which will reduce the amount of time it takes for a player to dive down and receive it. Now, there are three chasers who would try to throw this ball through one of the other teams hoops. If they do manage to throw it into the hoop, then that team would receive ten points." She threw the ball to me, I caught it holding it in my hands, staring down at the strange ball. She pointed at the other two balls, "Those are bludgers," she announced, "they are bewitched to fly around the field knocking people off their brooms. Now, the beaters fly around, with a bat, trying to hit the blunders anywhere other than their teammates. One might say they are protecting the chasers, keeper, and seeker." She looked at all of us, "you are not first years, so I'm going to let you all try to hit the bludger after you know how to fly on the broom. Now, the last ball is the golden snitch." She bent down into a small little cupboard on the top of the chest, opening it, to reveal a small ball, probably the size of a walnut. She picked it up, and held it out for us to see. The snitch is bewitched to fly around the field, trying not to get caught. It is the fastest ball, and the smallest. The seeker is usually the lightest, smallest, and fastest player on the team. If the seeker catches the ball, then that team get's 150 points, if he catches the ball, then that team wins." I shared a grin with Leo, before she started talking again. "The Gryffindor seeker is Mr. Potter, so that spot is closed. He is also the Gryffindor captain, so if he thinks some of you are good, then you'll take one of the empty places." She looked at everyone of us, and meeting Harry's gaze. "Well then, now, to teach you how to fly a broom. So, stand on the right side of the broom." We all shuffled to follow her instructions. "Now, put your right hand above the broomstick and say, "up"." I held my hand over the broom, me fingers twitching a little.
