The air had got gotten colder as the days passed. The chill that had seeped into the castle was more prevalent as time went on. I sat outside with my back against the ground, watching the clouds dance as they passed by. They did not keep me locked in my room anymore- for that would show that Elijah cared too much. They directed  the allusion of freedom to the public- but I was too smart to fall for the play. I knew that demons controlled the puppets as they hid backstage and in this unfortunate tale, I was the star.

I looked to the right and caught the eye of a guard who stood near the doors, his gaze burned into my sockets before he turned and patrolled the opposite area. It had been like this for days. Guards would stay on their normal route but pay close attention to my location when no one was looking. I sighed.

"Ammie ", a soft voice called out. I sat up as I saw Ophelia gliding across the court yard in my direction. I had not spoken with her since the horrific dinner last week. I hadn't spoke to anyone since, actually.

"Hello", my voice came out horse. Ophelia stopped a few feet away from me and watched as I stood up to greet her. After gazing at my features silently for a moment she pulled me into a hug.

"Oh Ammie" she whispered, "I have missed you so much". My arms slowly came around the small woman before a lump formed in my throat. This situation was almost too much to cope with. Emotion tore at my heart.

"It is nice to see you, my friend" I said, taking in her beautiful face. The corners of her lips lifted as she took my hand.

"Let's go inside- I wish to speak with you privately".

Ophelia sat in the chair across from me as she lifted a cup, filled with a dark red liquid, to her lips.

"You must have so many questions", she stated. Her eyes reminded me of Elijah's. They held so much passion within them. I processed my emotions before I spoke.

"I do not know what to ask you. I want to know about your life-where you've been; What you've done. However, I'm afraid I have something darker to ask". Ophelia straightened her back and locked her searing eyes on me again. She looked at me as if I was a dream- something that would disappear if she looked away. I pushed back that thought before I spoke again.

"Elijah... he spoke as if he wasn't himself. He spoke as if he was someone else and admitted to being the reason Elijah is dead", memories of his horrific statement played in my mind.

Ophelia observed me quietly before she signed, sadness taking over her features.

"Elijah has gone mad Ammie- he just isn't himself. He hasn't been for centuries. I am sorry- but his statements are false", she sternly said. I searched her eyes for any deceit but came up short handed. I felt myself exhale before feeling a pang of disappointment run up my spine. I was hoping it was true, in a way. Elijah has done so many horrible things to me and I couldn't cope with it. I started to feel even more confused.

"Why would be lie about something like that?" I asked.  Ophelia shook her head before she looked away, frustrated.

"Elijah doesn't have any humanity in him. He may have done it just to confuse and upset you. Maybe he was bored and wanted to play a game with you- it's hard to tell with him", emotion lined her voice and I suddenly felt remorseful for her. To watch your family become so evil would take a toll on anyone. I reached across the table and took her hand.

Ophelia's eyes locked on our conjoining hands before she looked up at me and smiled.

"I've missed you Amelia. I will do whatever I can to help you. You were my truest friend", she confessed. I felt joy in my heart for the first time in this hell hole.

I may be trapped but perhaps I have a secret weapon now. With Ophelia by my side, we could solve this puzzle piece.
