cheryl had had friends once. her best friend, betty cooper, had been the best friend she could have had. for a while. then, just when cheryl had needed her most, she was gone.

{flashback part thingamajigger}

betty and cheryl were best friends. they had been since 6th grade, a year ago. they were kind of opposites, betty was really smart, and cheryl was more creative. that didn't stop their friendship though. they did everything together. every Saturday they would go to pops, have a milkshake (betty would get vanilla and cheryl would get strawberry), then they would go over to cheryl's house to play board games and stuff. cheryl's dad would bring them snacks and drinks while her mom was at work, and sometimes he would even join in on the fun.

one day cheryl and betty were playing "connect four" when Cheryl's dad walked in with a plate of apple slices and a bowl potato chips. he started cheering them on,  each time they restarted he would choose a random side, sometimes cheryl sometimes betty.

"daaaad. you can't cheer on betty. i'm your daughter, you're supposed to be cheering for ME." cheryl whined.

"but that wouldn't be fair to betty. she has nobody to be her cheerleader." her dad smiled.

"then betty can bring her dad over so she will have one." cheryl declared. her dad only chuckled and ate one of the chips. eventually he finished them all to he walked into the kitchen to get more. betty and cheryl continued playing until they heard a groan in pain.

"dad?" cheryl asked. "are you okay?"

"i'm okay sweetie. i just-- ow... my right side really hurts, but i think... i think.. ow i can't talk... i'm going to be o...." his voice trailed off and they heard him fall to the floor. they rushed to the kitchen.

"DAD!" cheryl screamed. she dropped to the ground, crying and holding his head in her hands, he didn't open his eyes. betty got the phone and called 911. the ambulance came and got cheryl's mom to come home. then they quickly took him away. a few days later it was confirmed that he had had a stroke, and that he was dead. cheryl cried for the rest of the night, and her mom didn't do anything. she just watched.

later that week cheryl didn't let betty come over. it was too traumatizing. she also kept her distance from her, being around her felt like watching her dad die all over again.

"cher?" betty asked her about a month later. cheryl turned around. no. she didn't want to talk to betty.

"yeah?" she asked, hoping it would end soon.

"want to go to pops today? it's saturday, so i thought we could go."

"sorry betty but i can't today. got plans." she said, even though she didn't.

"with who?" betty asked.

"um... my... mom?" it sounded more like a question than a fact.

"if you don't want to hang out with me, cheryl, just say so."

"what? no no, of course i do!"

"i know you don't talk or hang out EVER with your mom. so what is this really about?"

"FINE. IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT THIS IS ABOUT, THEN I'LL TELL YOU. IT'S MY DAD OKAY? WHENEVER I LOOK OR TALK TO YOU I THINK IF THAT DAY WHEN HE DIED AND IT'S SO HARD FOR ME OKAY??? MY MOM ISN'T HELPING ME GET THROUGH THIS AT ALL, SHE JUST LETS ME CRY ALONE IN MY ROOM AT NIGHT. I KNOW SHE CAN HEAR ME, BUT SHE DOESN'T HELP. EVER. BETTY I KEEP WANTING TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT IT, BUT I CAN'T. I KNOW THIS IS JUST ME OVERREACTING OR SOMETHING BECAUSE I KNOW YOU DID NOTHING WRONG, BUT I... JUST CAN'T." betty stared at her, disappointed.

"i thought we could get through this together, you could open up to me, but i guess not. it's okay though cheryl. i'll find new friends, ones that love me and won't cut me off."

betty just slowly stopped hanging out with cheryl. she became friends with archie andrews and jughead jones. about two months later cheryl was feeling alone. she went to betty.

"hey betts" she said, tapping her on the shoulder.

"oh, hey cheryl..." betty looked at her expectantly, almost judgingly. "whatcha doing here?"

"i just um... do you want to go to pops today?" cheryl knew she would say yes. they were best friends, betty would cancel her plans.

"uh, can't.  got plans with arch." she nudged archie andrews, who was standing beside her.

"oh... okay" cheryl slowly walked away. she could hear betty and archie, even though betty had though she had left.

"what was that?" archie asked. "we don't have plans!"

"i know, but i don't want to hang out with 'cheryl blossom'. she's unstable."  betty said cheryl's name like she was some prissy little girl. cheryl was so hurt by what betty had just said. she thought she was her friend! cheryl stormed over to betty.

"I AM NOT UNSTABLE!! MY DAD HAD DIED BETTY! CAN'T YOU UNDERSTAND THAT I NEEDED SOME SPACE?? AND WOOOOW. I THOUGHT YOU WERE MY FRIEND!! CALLING ME UNSTABLE? REAL BITCH MOVE BETTY."  betty was a bit taken aback. nobody had called her a bitch before, but she quickly got over it.

"this is exactly what i mean, you're so unstable. get your shit together you little diva! it happened 4 months ago, and you're still crying about it like it happened yesterday! chill the fuck out cheryl."

"I HATE YOU!" cheryl cried. "I HATE YOU BETTY I HATE YOU SO FUCKING MUCH! YOU DESERVE TO DIE IN A HOLE! DO THE WORLD A FAVOR AND JUMP OFF A CLIFF WOULD YOU?" she covered her mouth, knowing she had gone too far. betty started crying and ran to the principal's office. the next day the whole school had heard the story, only it was one where it had only been cheryl had been picking on betty. cheryl cried in her room that night, knowing her mom could hear her sobs, but also knowing that nobody was going to help her.
