"Again! Do that again!"
"I know! I know! Shut up already."
Y/N sighed at the freak duo's daily bickering. He stood ready on the other side of the volleyball net, prepared to receive the ball about to come his way. Just like always, toss, jump, spike, receive, repeat. The ball bounced off the libero's arms and curved back to Kageyama who tossed to Hinata again. No matter where Hinata spiked, Y/N would always be one step ahead and send the ball back for repeat.
"Alright! We're gonna score with this quick attack against the cats, too!" Hinata cheered in an energic tone. The h/c hair just glanced to the side, getting adjusted to all his energy, but a small smile curved on his lips as he nodded in agreement. "Yeah... I'm sure you will, Hinata."
As the two began to squaddle again, Y/N sweat dropped and shook his head at them. Hearing voices by the door, he spotted Asahi and his captain. While he was unable to eavesdrop, their visual interaction was impossible to miss. Currently, Asahi attempted to escape the captain's claws, only to fail. When their small nonsense was done, Daichi turned around to walk away, then came back to hit the peer in the upper arm. The freak duo wasn't the only ones deserving of a headshake.
"C-Coaching?! Really??!" Daichi was clearly NOT expecting this man - barely past his mid twenties - to be their new coach. "Up through the match with Nekoma, that is." The man specified who was introduced as 'Ukai-kun'.
"Ehh? But he's the guy from Sakanoshita, right? Is he really a coach?"
"He's an alumnus of this school and coach Ukai's grandson." Takeda explained.
Having clarified all the small talk, the new coach announced the sudden practise match between the current Karasuno team and the Karasuno Neighborhood Association Team.
-
As the opponents came through the well-known doors, the teens only observed them from afar.
'I thought they'd be older...' Y/N thought to himself. His two classmates also agreed with his internal statement. "And here I was thinking they'd be older, since he called it a neighborhood association..." Tsukishima voiced his opinion bluntly. Yamaguchi sweat dropped accordingly to his friend.
"Alright! It's time to get started!" Coach Ukai announced.
The two liberos stood next to each other in silence, not saying much. Y/N was fiddling with his fingers, disliking the spontaneous announcement.
"What's the problem?"
"Ah. Sorry, he's not really..." Daichi tried to explain Yu's situation.
"Huh? Why? Are they both injured?"
"No, it's not that, but..."
As the two began to try solve it, Y/N went over to Ryuu, not wanting to be a part of the discussion.
'I wanna go home... I don't want to do this, at all...', Y/N groaned in his head, absolutely not liking the sudden match he had to play by the temporarily new coach.
"It's Asahi-san!" Hinata exclaimed while hanging by the rails on the window, looking outside. He caught the whole team's attention, even the coach's. Ukai stuck his head through the door, instructing the late third year to get in, yelling at the poor man with an impatient voice. All eyes were on the ace as he stepped into the gym, but he didn't meet anyone else's.
As they got sorted into teams, Y/N was placed as Karasuno's libero and Yuu on the Association's team. Even before the game had officially begun, the room oozed with tension.
As the first year libero watched from the sidelines, he could tell the ace was having problems with something. He noticed his pained expression every time he was blocked.
'The view from up there... Isn't that something only offensive positions can see?' Thinking over it, he sighed. That meant both him and Nishinoya had gievn up on that view to protect the ground. His e/c eyes followed every move of his senpais, observing them play. His knee was shaking.
"So, one more time, call out for the toss!! Ace!!" Nishinoya's voice called out, reaching the ace's ears.
"Recover!"
"Alright!"
'Sugawara... He's conflicted. Can I say something? I should say-'
"Sugawara-san!! One more time!!!" Kageyama yelled out
"Until it goes through!!" Y/N added on, surprising himself.
"Shimada-sa-"
"Suga!!! One more time!!"
The toss was made. It was as if everyone was holding their breath. The setter had made his choice. The toss went up.
"Asahi...!!"
It was blocked.
The first year's shoulders slightly dropped as he gazed over at the score board.
03 -02 to the Neighbohood Association.
Looking back at the court again, he expected the brunet ace to gloom, but he didn't. This time, he didn't seem discouraged. He looked down at his own s/c hand. "If only I had that kind of confidence in my abilities..." He sighed, mumbling to himself.
At the score of 07 - 05, still with the veterans in the lead, the freak duo released their monster quick. The whole Association team, coach and the newly introduced libero and ace, gaped at the attack. None of them said a word, stunned in place.
Being switched with Ennoshita, Y/N entered the field as a nervous wreck. As the game continued, he was barely unable to save an incoming spike, making an 'urgh' sound as the ball fell in front of him, mockingly hitting the ground. "Damn feint..." He groaned under his breath.
Points were exchanged back and forth, but the veterans were in their match point by 24 -21.
The toss was sent to Asahi, spiking with all his might into Hinata's hand. It bounced off and nearly hit the back wall.
It was as if time was standing still. The Karasuno team watched as the ball fall towards the ground in slow motion.
A flash of h/c passed them. It was almost like the air turned cold and the ice cold gust from a blizzard entered the gym, paralyzing both the team and opponents. Diving after the ball, Y/N dug the falling ball just in time. Not again. He wouldn't let the ball mock him for a second time. It went up, flew back to the court and over the net.
"Freeball!"
Before Y/N could get back to the court, the no touch ace had won his team the first set.
Y/N's arms were beet red and stung from the powerful spike, but Hinata had it probably worse seeing as his arms shared the same shade of red.
Now it was the shortest first year's turn to get the stunned gapes. He anxiously glanced around at the people in confusion, fiddling with his fingers. Had he done something wrong? Despite wishing to ask, a meak 'Huh...?-' espaced him.
"What the hell was that?!" Ukai was the first to break free from the silence.
"I don't follow.-"
"You got some serious libero potential, kid! And here I thought you were just another girl manager."
"Excuse me..?"
"Coach, Y/N is a guy. He's also our second libero." Daichi clarified.
"Ah, my bad my bad. Anyways kid, just keep doing that thing you just did." The coach sat back down again with the advisor.
"That's the same thing that happened in the match against Blue Castle.", Takeda mumbled, watching the first year libero play with heavy breaths.
