Small Talk and Self Study

Y/N stared boredly out of the window in a daze. It was a bit boring, but at least self study wasn't as bad as normal lessons. The teacher had gone out, leaving the students for themselves in the classroom. Once the sensei was out of hearing reach, everyone broke into a chatter, excluding some people who wanted to do their own things. This also included the three volleyball players, for now. Both Yamaguchi and Tsukishima were probably doing their whatnots, but then again Y/N didn't pay attention to them either.

Suddenly, the short boy felt someone poking his shoulder. Looking over at the person, he turned to Tadashi. He tilted his head, wondering what the middle blocker wanted. Kei was watching the two others from the corner of his eye, but didn't interrupt them.

"Well, since we're in the same class and all..." The nervous male began to trail off. Not wishing to assume anything, Y/N kept his mouth shut, only nodding for the other to go on. "I was wondering if, you know... We could get to know each other more..?" He glanced to the side, automatically looking over at Tsukishima who turned his gaze away when the two of them accidentally made eyecontact.

"..Sure."

"Really..?"

The shorter of the two nodded with a shrug.

"What's this? Is the extra short Shortie finally willing to talk? When did you learn to speak more than a sentance?"

Yamaguchi quietly snickered at Tsukishima's mocking input, but Y/N ignored it.

"There's a difference between a small, and a larger group. I also talk when I feel for it." He simply stated at the blonde. "Anyways, is there anything in specific you want to know?" The libero lifted a brow at the dark haired middle blocker.

"I don't think you ever mentioned where you moved from." Tadashi thought aloud.

"(Country)."

"You lived there your whole life? To suddenly move to Japan, you speak Japanese awfully well through the accent." Kei shot in his own question, not managing to exclude another snarky comment. He didn't even know why he did it. He didn't find Y/N annoying like the freak duo, so why was he doing it? The blonde brushed the thought over.

Y/N shook his head. "I've lived in Japan before. I was born in (Country), but my parents and sister moved to Japan when I was about 1 or 2 years old. We moved back to (Country) when I was around 9, I think. We moved a lot due to my parents work, and still kinda do. We spoke mostly (mother tongue) at home since my parents originally came from the country we just moved from."

"That means you can speak about three lanuages or something then." Yamaguchi half stated and half questioned, earning a nod from the one other.

"What does your parents work as? Since they travel so much."

"Well, actually... My mom is a pilot. My dad works with marinebiology. It's my mother's job that makes us travel. Though, we plan on staying here so (sister's name) and I can get a full education." The h/c haired boy scratched the back of his cheek with a sheepish manner. It had been a while since the last time he chatted with someone about himself like this. It felt nice. He hadn't bonded much with anyone when they moved back to (country), seeing as he didn't know if they'd move again or not.

At that time, he was already having doubts about his previous self.

"Since when did you start volleyball then?" Kei's question brought Y/N back to the conversation again.

"Around when I was 6, I think." He thought aloud, trying to recall the year more specifically.

"Really? That's early." Yamaguchi smiled at him. "Who did you learn volleyball from? Parents? Did you have a coach? Were you on a team? Did you play when you were back in (Country)?"

Trying to recall all the questions he had just been throws, he slowly thought aloud his replies.

"Well... It wasn't my parents, or anyone in my family. I have a friend I really look up to, and he acted like a mentor and brother to me before we moved away. Still does. It was only me and him, so I've never been on a team before. Karasuno is my first team. I did some self practise back in (Country), but then I tried out (sport). So I did that for a while. It was fun until I hit a block and quit. A mental one, not physically." He hurried to add on.

"That means you've never played in an official match, and Aoba Johsai was your first match."

The shortie of the trio nodded.

As the three of them chatted and time went by, topics changed from volleyball to interests to whatever else there was to know about one another. Y/N got to know Tsukishima had an older brother, and the two middle blockers had been friends since they were young.

The deeper talk didn't really take place, but they did brush into some grey zones of that genre, as well. It wasn't too much and the subject was quickly changed if any of them noticed the other was uncomfortable. In conclusion, it was a good talk.

Tsukishima had also managed to refrain from taunting the short libero more than normal during the conversation. Though, he couldn't avoid some slip-ups here and there. Luckily, Y/N didn't take them to heart and simply laughed them off, or pretended to be insulted by them which lead to them all snickering at each other.

"This is the most I've heard Y/N talk. I'm surprised you barely do in practise."

Y/N considered the statement for a moment. "Crowds aren't really my thing, you could say. Plus, it's not uncomfertable to chat with you guys.", he shrugged as the two others exchanged a quick glance. They shared an expression he couldn't read.

"By the way, why do you sound so femenine? You look it too." Tsukishima bluntly asked, raising the question the whole school and volleyball team were probably wondering about. Well, everyone except two who knew the truth.

Y/N fell quiet. Taken back by the sudden question, his posture clearly tensed up. He looked like a goldfish on land while stumbling for words to explain himself. Just as he was about to say something, the bell rung over their heads, signaling class was over.

All three of them got up like everyone else and took their leave after gathering their stuff in their bags. Y/N breathed out in relief, but he doubted neither of the two classmates would let the thought rest. Especially after that last reaction of his.
