It was the next day and Nutpaw was starting her training! She was super excited. She waited near the rock for her mentor. Darkenedpaw followed after her. "I can't wait until Orangepelt arrives!" He said with excitement in his voice. He basically voiced Nutpaw's thoughts. "I know!" She replied. Darkenedpaw started cleaning himself. Nutpaw saw this as a perfect chance to practice fighting. She crouched down and didn't make a sound. She quickly pounced on her brother. "Ah!" He hissed. They rolled over and over until they bumped into something. Nutpaw got off of Darkenedpaw and saw it was Mudspeed. Next to him was Orangepelt. Nutpaw laughed awkwardly. "Hello, Mudspeed" She meowed politely. Mudspeed didn't seem very impressed. Orangepelt seemed like he was trying not to explode into laughter. "Come on, then" Mudspeed meowed. Orangepelt and Darkenedpaw followed so she assumed they were training together. Mudspeed led them through the forest, to the river. "Okay," he began. "We will be learning how to catch fish today." Orangepelt nodded. "I'll demonstrate first" he mewed. He waited until some fish appeared. He swiped at a fish and picked in up with his claws. The fish flopped around but it soon stopped. "Can someone explain the steps of what Orangepelt did?" Mudspeed asked. Darkenedpaw and Nutpaw took turns explaining what he did. "Exactly," Orangepelt purred. "Now Darkenedpaw, can you repeat what I did?" Darkenedpaw nodded. He grabbed the fish successfully, but he got freaked out when it started wiggling all over the place and he dropped it again. Mudspeed shook his head. "Remember to always hold onto the fish, it can't hurt you."
Darkenedpaw was visibly embarrassed. Nutpaw felt bad for him, but she knew she would do better. "Your turn, Nutpaw" Mudspeed meowed. Nutpaw was ready. As soon as a fish came along, she caught it, and didn't let go. "I did it!" She mewed with pride. "Good job" Orangepelt purred. Darkenedpaw touched his nose to Nutpaw's cheek. "Better than I could ever do. Nutpaw purred back at him. "Nah, this was just your first time."
Mudspeed kept his cold glare. Nutpaw looked up at him. "You did quite well, Nutpaw" he meowed slightly. Nutpaw felt a short burn of anger at Mudspeed's look. "Okay, everybody!" Orangepelt announced, making Nutpaw slip out of her mind. "Let's go!" Nutpaw carried the fish that she had caught, feeling extremely proud of herself. They walked back to camp and Nutpaw brought the prey to the elders den. She had never met any of elders before, so she was a little bit nervous. She stepped in and a light grey she-cat greeted her. "Hello there, young one!" She purred to Nutpaw. "H-hello!" She mewed back. "I'm Laketoes," She meowed. "You're Nutpaw, aren't you?" Nutpaw nodded and handed her the fish. "And you caught this all by yourself?" Nutpaw felt warmth in her body from Laketoes kind words. "Y-yes" Nutpaw mewed. Laketoes purred. "Thank you, young Nutpaw." Nutpaw nodded politely. "See ya!" She meowed as she walked out of the elders' den. She knew from that moment that she would like being an apprentice.
