"No!" Shrieked Nutpaw, looking at the she-cat's corpse. Darkenedpaw padded up next to her. He shook his head in disbelief. "This... this can't be happening!" He sobbed. Nutpaw lay down next to her mother. Darkenedpaw did the same. They both cried next to Longclaw. Snowpaw walked to them. "Oh no..." she mewed looking scarred. "I'm so sorry..."
Nutpaw turned her head to Snowpaw. She tried to hiss, but it came out as another sob. Eventually, Gloomstar called from the rock. "C-calling all cats who are... old enough to hunt..." he meowed, stumbling with his words. Nutpaw no longer had much respect for him. He barely defended his clan! But she still sucked up her sadness and sat near the rock. Snowpaw and Darkenedpaw sat next to her. "A-as you know..." Gloomstar seemed like he was going to cry. His eyes were glazed. Stormclaw sighed. "As you know, one of our queens, Longclaw, has died. Luckily, her remaining kit is ready to become an apprentice" Stormclaw meowed faithfully. Nutpaw respected the deputy much more than Gloomstar. Gloomstar nodded quickly, a bit shocked about Stormclaw speaking up. "Smallkit," Gloomstar announced, not ready to stop being leader. "With... with your mentor being..." he looked around, thinking of a warrior. "...Leaffall, you will now be known as Smallpaw." Cats tried to be happy for the new apprentice, despite all that had just happened. "Smallpaw, Smallpaw!" They mewed. Smallpaw looked anxiously at the crowd. He obviously missed his mother. He stepped down and nuzzled Leaffall. Leaffall whispered something in his ear and they both stepped back. Nutpaw felt bad for her little brother, and sad about her mother. She looked to Darkenedpaw and saw he felt similar feelings as she did.
It was almost the end of the day. Nutpaw hadn't eaten, but she was too sad to. So she started walking to the apprentice's den. "H-hey." A small mew sounded behind her. She turned around and saw Smallpaw. "Hi there" Nutpaw mewed back. She now noticed how tiny he was, and wondered why she didn't notice before. "Do... you miss mom?" He mewed sadly. Nutpaw licked her little brother's ear. "Of course" she meowed. "But we have to stay strong for her." Smallpaw nodded and continued walking towards the apprentice den. Nutpaw followed him. Flamepaw seemed like he was waiting for them. He snickered when they entered. "Aw! He's so small!" Nutpaw flattened her ears in anger. "Come on Smallpaw, you can sleep next to us" Darkenedpaw mewed. Nutpaw and Smallpaw walked over. Nutpaw plopped down. Smallpaw circled around until it was comfortable enough and he sat down. Nutpaw yawned and shut her eyes.
