The next morning, Nutkit woke up at the same time as her brother and mother. "I'm hungry" whined Nutkit. Darkenedkit yawned. "I'm hungry!" Nutkit repeated more louder. "Yes, yes" Longclaw meowed getting up. "Let's go eat."
She started walking and Darkenedkit and Nutkit followed her. They came to the fresh-kill pile. Nutkit grabbed a small mouse and ate it quickly. Darkenedkit grabbed a fish. This reminded Nutkit of the incident which happened yesterday. She watched Darkenedkit eat the fish and didn't realize he was staring right back at her. "Why are you staring at me, weirdo?" Nutkit burst into laughter, not knowing what to say. She kept laughing until she couldn't breath, then she started to cough. Darkenedkit chuckled and finished his fish.
Soon, they were interrupted by Gloomstar. "Calling all cats old enough to catch their own prey!" He howled. Nutkit and Darkenedkit stayed, as they were still kits. Longclaw stayed with them as well. Then a few minutes later, they saw Gloomstar approach them. "Gloomstar?" Longclaw got up and padded to Gloomstar. "Is there something wrong?" Gloomstar flicked his tail. "Your kits are having their ceremony!" He answered. "What?" Longclaw retorted. Gloomstar's ears went flat against his head. "Did I not tell you?" Nutkit and Darkenedkit were very confused. "Were they going to become apprentices today?
Longclaw shook her head. "Oh, haredung!" Gloomstar hissed. "I thought I did..." Longclaw walked over to her kits and nudged them. "Well, you wouldn't want to miss your apprenticeship ceremony!" Nutkit and her brother never ran faster in their entire lives. They couldn't miss this day! They arrived at the rock with Gloomstar. He climbed the rock and all the cats stopped chattering. "I am sorry for the delay," Gloomstar announced. "But we are ready to name two new apprentices."
Nutkit's paws tingled. Darkenedkit's too. "Darkenedkit," Gloomstar said, smiling at him. "With your mentor, Orangepelt, you shall now be known as Darkenedpaw" everyone cheered. Darkenedpaw looked very anxious, but determined. He and Orangepelt nuzzled. Nutkit was happy for him, but even more happy that she was becoming an apprentice next. "Nutkit," Gloomstar meowed. "With your mentor being Mudspeed..." Mudspeed seemed surprised that Nutkit was his apprentice. Nutkit wondered why.
"...you shall be known as Nutpaw" Nutpaw turned around and nuzzled Mudspeed. He still seemed uncomfortable, but Nutpaw didn't really care at the moment. "Darkenedpaw, Nutpaw, Darkenedpaw, Nutpaw!" The clan cheered. Nutpaw felt determination fill her body.
