3rd person pov
The master was staring at the team, watching their every move. "I must say I do have one of your comrades with me. As we speak he is being tortured right now." He added after seeing Chernoa's eyes widen, "Yes, tortured. But not enough to make him die. But of course if you do not give me what I want then your friend....dies. It's so simple."
"What the hell do you want?" Xander hissed. "You. And a chest, perhaps, your father left you? You have 10 minutes to decide. Give me the boy and the chest, and all will be forgiven. Your lives will be spared. Make the right decision. Don't make this difficult for yourselves." The master's voice was stern and serious.
"Why does he want you? What do you have?" Chyann asked. "Unfortunately I do not know. But we are not going down without a fight." Xander declared with much determination. "Aren't we going to save Wayne?" Chernoa mumbled, evidently distraught. "We have the master within our grasp. He will lead us to Wayne." Rie said, earning a nod from Xander.
"But...he's very powerful. I think. Well all villains are powerful. We can't just fight him like that we need a good plan. We need to wound him. Wound the leader to scatter the followers." Chernoa said.
Silence.
"I'll go." Lionel started dabbing dynamites and grenades and attaching them to himself. "What? What are you talking about, Lionel?" Chernoa asked, a queasy feeling crawling up her. "I'm going to light up these explosives, run forward, attach myself to the master, then kaboom! He's gone. And we're all safe." Lionel said, as if it meant nothing.
"You know what this can cost you? I won't let you die." Chernoa rested a hand on Lionel's shoulder.
"I know. But I'm willing to sacrifice myself. For Wayne. For you. For us." Lionel smiled softly. Then he turned to Xander, "I need you to distract him before I can attach myself to the master." Xander nodded. "Turn him around so I can attach myself to his back. I can definitely kill him from there." Lionel instructed Xander. "Alright."
When the team was all geared up, Xander shouted, "Hey! Master guy!" The master tilted his head. "I accept your offer." They waiter with bated breaths as they saw Xander walking to the masked man, managing to turn the man around.
Lionel smiled bitterly at the trio, "There is power in self sacrifice."
Those were his last words as he ran forward.
"MASTER LOOK OUT!"
"XANDER GET OUT OF THERE!"
The moment Lionel came into contact with the master, he let out a cry and they both exploded with a loud bang.
Chernoa's pov
Silence.
All around us were blood, Lionel's guts body parts. I was shaking furiously. The loss of a friend was getting to me. The fact that he so willingly sacrificed himself was scary. The blood that had splattered on my hands.
This was all my fault.
A howl rang through my ears and my head snapped up, seeing the master was not dead. Not dead?! What the hell?!
His clothes were ripped, he was severely wounded, giving me a clear view of his face. He was dashing and had the looks of someone in his early 20's. This did not make sense. He sounded so old. I watched as a hooded figure dragged the howling master away. His anger radiating from him. The shouts of pain and fury. "GET THE BOY! YOU ALL SHALL PAY!"
I was carrying the weight of more deaths. First my parents, now Lionel. What more do I have to bear?
"Get up." I looked up only to meet Chyann's hardened gaze. I was kneeling on the ground, afraid of facing the reality.
"I said get up." Her cold voice made me wince. "Chyann, she's just scared." Rie was trying to reason with her, but she ignored it.
"Either you get up and fight this. Or you crawl away and die alone like a coward." Chyann looked at me stonily. "Are you going to let his sacrifice go to waste? Get up!"
Gritting my teeth, I stood up slowly. I looked at my trembling hands.
I couldn't. I knew I couldn't fight again. But I wasn't about to let Lionel's sacrifice go to waste.
"I-I'll try." I muttered softly.
A/N: ahhh our first death (excluding the parents) r.i.p Lionel you have served your purpose well. Vote and comment!!
