Evan POV

"Evan, honey, could you get the door? Jennifer and Jared are here for dinner," Mom called from the kitchen.

"Yeah, just a sec." I finished writing my flashcard and then went to open the door. Jennifer was holding a pan of brownies and Jared was watching some Jacksepticeye video on his phone.

We ate quickly then Jared and I went upstairs while our moms talked about mom stuff. Jared kept asking questions about Connor, acting like he died or something. Oh god.

"So are you guys like still together?"

"Yeah."

"How do you feel about it? Like are you okay?"

"I don't know. I'm okay." I sighed.

"And do you ever wa-"

"Everything's cool, okay? I don't wanna talk about it."

"Jeez, Hansen, you're spicy today."

"What?"

He laughed. "Nah, you're like those Mexican candies that are sweet but kind of spicy."

So I'm Mexican candy now. Great.

On Tuesday, Jared and I noticed Connor wasn't at school, and he hadn't been on Monday either. I started to get worried.

"So your birthday's on Saturday, right?" Jared asked.

I'm worried about that too. "Oh. Right, yeah."

"You forgot about your birthday? Man, that's sad. Do you want anything?"

Whoa. Someone other than my mom seems to care about my birthday? I'm not almost crying, my eyes are sweating. "What?"

"Like not a car or something. Ya boi's broke. But I'll try, ya know?"

I looked away for a moment, making it seem like I was thinking. I don't really want anything, now that I think about it. I never really get stuff for my birthday except for a cake. We don't have much money, so I just get what I need. That's why my mom works so late all the time.

I also don't want to just say 'I want this' because I'm afraid I'll come off as rude or something. Go me.

I said, "A stable relationship." I stood up with my backpack. "And some colored pencils."

I went to the bathroom and just breathed really quickly. I'm nOT hyperventilating. I'm fine.

I felt my phone buzz. I have two texts from Jared. I ignored them to beat myself up over things I have no control over whatsoever. I stayed in the bathroom for the rest of the period.

When I got home, I was actually kind of relieved that my mom was still at work. I was able to cry and talk to myself and try to be somewhere else, mentally.
