The days after are filled with laughter and joy. Kendall starts meeting Roxie and me by our lockers in the morning, in between classes, and after school. He joins us for lunch too, but at times, he sits with others out of benevolence since they save him a seat beforehand. We make jokes, talk about school, and talk about our mistakes or funny moments. I have been able to fall asleep faster, and I don't get nightmares as much anymore. It's as if the accident has been erased from my memories.
"You seem livelier these days. I don't know what it is, but it's working. I'm glad, Vi," Roxie says, smiling. I smile back, our arms linked together. Kendall walks over with his backpack over his shoulder. He is wearing a light pink button-up shirt and dark blue jeans, his hair in its regular state. He smiles at Roxie, and when his eyes land on me, they seem to light up. Roxie clears her throat.
"Doesn't Violet look pretty today?" she asks, a smirk dancing on her lips. I am wearing a spaghetti strap, beige, plaid dress over a plain white tee paired with a pair of white tennis. She begged me to wear this combination of clothes since she found them in the mall and thought that I would look cute in them. So this is her motive. I playfully slap her arm.
"She...always does...but yeah," he says, hesitantly, with a small smile. A deep red creeps up his face. Roxie squeals with glee, and I blush intensely.
"Thank you...You look great too," I say, and she giggles.
"Real men wear pink, guys, and it's also Wednesday. I didn't know you watched Mean Girls, Kendall," she states, referring to his shirt, and we all laugh. The bell rings, and we say our goodbyes. Roxie and I head to our first class, which is Calculus. "He's totally into you, Vi!" she squeals.
"I-..." I start my sentence but don't finish it and close my mouth.
"You know it's true that's why you have no comments to make." She smiles. I shake my head and chuckle. I sit in class but cannot pay attention. My mind is occupied by the thought of Kendall. Does he really like me, or is he just being nice? He did blush when he said I was pretty, but maybe he's just embarrassed because he's never said that to a girl before? But I'm sure he has said that to his mother, but a mother is different than a girl from school. Ugh! I don't know! I scratch the sides of my head with both hands in frustration.
Catching the attention of my teacher, Mrs. Eddie, she asks me a question. "Ms. Peres, do you not get the material I am teaching here? You sound frustrated." Focusing back to the class, I shake my head.
"Ah, no, I get the material you are teaching, Mrs. Eddie." She narrows her eyes at me in suspicion.
"Come up here and solve this equation for me, Violet." I look to Roxie, and she gives me a supporting look. I walk up to the board and study the problem. After a few seconds of thinking about the right method to finding an accurate answer, I work out the problem without mistake or hesitation. I walk away from the board for her to inspect and after a few nods, she speaks up, "This is a great method to finding the answer, good job, Violet. Seems like you are paying attention."
"Thanks?..." I walk back to my seat.
"The rest of you guys should take a look at her rough work and learn something from it. I expect you guys to be able to do the same thing as Violet. Now, let's continue the lesson." She turns around to face the board and continues scribbling examples. Roxie taps me on the shoulder, I look at her, and she gives me a thumbs up. I smile and give her a thumbs up too.
Lunch finally comes around, and we search for a table in the cafeteria. Roxie and I spot Kendall waving at us, signaling for us to head over to his table. As we reach the table, Roxie ushers for me to sit next to him. I sigh and obey, knowing I can't win an argument with her.
