I slowly opened my eyes, a frown already covering my face.
"Lila must've been deeply asleep if she allowed me to slip through..." I sighed as I sat up.
A glance at the hole in the roof told me that it was night. The fire in the nearby chimney had gone out, leaving faint embers behind. A small gust of wind brushed over my skin, causing me to shiver slightly.
I pointed to the fire and moved my finger in a clockwise motion. A small red glowing ring appeared briefly in the air before disappearing. Instantly the fire burst to life, sending small pebbles and sticks flying to my feet as a burst of energy flowed through me.
I winced. "Maybe a bit too much ether," I muttered as the previous burst of energy drained out of my body.
What has Lila been doing where our body is having trouble with simple elemental magic? Oh, that's right, she revived that thorn rabbit...
"I warned her what would happen. Why does she believe I'm a curse? Why doesn't she trust me..." I whispered as I stared into the flames. There was a familiar weight in my chest; it was like a tree was lying across my chest.
My, my, my, aren't I in a sad state?
A large thump shook me out of my thoughts. I shot to my feet, my wings flaring out as my body tensed up. But a moment later, a familiar warmth washed through my body.
"Ah, Varuun! You're home, I-" I froze in the open doorway underneath the feeling of warmth was something else.
A cold, thick chill shot through my body, causing me to shiver as I wrapped my arms around myself. The cold was crushing, freezing my limb and lungs; my eyes widened as I scanned Varuun.
This malice, this malevolence...did Varuun get tainted by him?
I scowled then shook my head.
"If it were him, he would've destroyed this form by now," I whispered as I let out a sigh of relief.
A small crunching sound met my ears, causing me to look up at Varuun once more. "Varuun, whatever is in your mouth, please drop it," I commanded, my tone firm yet gentle.
Varuun's large body jolted as though he were standing at attention, then he knelt before me and opened his mouth.
What he placed at my feet was a very mangled corpse, long red hair slick with saliva, blood, and matted with chunks of gore. Two dark, long, curved horns protruded from his forehead. One of his eyes stared up blankly at me; what had probably been a vibrant yellow iris was now dull and milky in appearance. The other eye was nothing more than a black socket filled to the brim with something that looked like the whites of a raw egg.
Large claw marks raked through what was left of his chest, his innards were plainly visible, and the harder I looked, the more I saw. Glistening intestines that looked like sausage links, a red heart that lay still tucked away inside crumbled ivory ribs. As I reached out to touch the corpse, a black spark shot up, and pain whipped through my hand.
