"What in the world is the Church of the Sacred Wing doing stationed in this backwater village? They don't even have an ether barrier," I whispered as I stared at the front gate.
Well, that fool of a village chief did say that the church helped them gather the money. Still, I doubt they'd station troops here for something like that.
The gate was attached to a large wooden spike wall that stretched high into the sky and wrapped around the small village. The church's black and golden flag flew high, just slightly visible above the wall.

The church members standing at the gate wore long white and gold hooded cloaks; the sleeves were large, the opening stretching out over their arms and dangling below their wrist, exposing their wings there. A strange gold and black mask covered their faces; underneath each eye was an engraving of a white glowing wing.
