Jason's pov

I had fallen asleep on the couch but woke up hearing laughter. I walked into the kitchen and saw Ethan sitting on the counter and Miranda stirring something at the stove. Sierra stood beside her. "What ya makin' honey?" "Caramel." She says, smiling back at me. "Whoa it's bubbling!" Ethan says, wide eyed, making me and Miranda laugh. I lean against the counter beside Ethan. "It's gonna taste so good!" Sierra says, hopping up and down excited. After a few minutes, she finishes making the caramel.

*The next day*

I was watching TV with Sierra when Miranda came downstairs with Ethan on her hip. "Hey Jase I'm making a run to the store for dinner stuff. Wanna come?" "Sure. Just gotta grab my boots." She smiles and her and the kids go to the truck. I throw on my boots and walk out. I love my wonderful little family so much. I don't know what I'd do without them. We get to the store and she was asking the kids what they wanted for dinner. I wasn't paying much attention, just scrolling through Instagram. I couldn't help but smile when I read excited fans' comments. I replied to a few for fun. "Everybody get down! This is a robbery!" I hear shouted. I look up caught off guard. A guy stood with a gun in the manager's back. "I said get down on the ground!! Nobody better play the hero!" Anger flashes in me but Miranda grabs my arm. "Don't fight him." She whimpers shaking. She scoops Ethan out of the cart and grabbed Sierra's hand. She kneeled down but... I just couldn't. "Babe you know I can't just sit  by while this is happening. "This isn't your job anymore. Think of your family!" I'm torn. "But-" "Move it asshole!" The jerk growls, shoving the manager who looked plum terrified and on the verge of tears. "Please d-don't shoot! I've got a 4 year old who needs me!" "Then move it and I won't shoot." He opened the register, thoroughly angering me. No way am I letting this happen. "Jason, please!" Miranda begs quietly, tears in her eyes. I'm sorry. I stand up, a hand on my pistol. "No!" She cries. The robber looks up hearing her scream. Crap. "Drop the gun old man!" He growls. The manager screams in fear as he presses the gun into his back. "I'm a fucking cop, douchebag. I've already got a few squad cars on the way. You won't get out of here alive!" I shout, sorta lying. Obviously I haven't really called anyone. He looks angry. I could tell he was about to shoot so I ran forward and shoved the manager out of the way. I rammed a shopping cart into the gunman's side. He dropped his gun and fell. I found a zip tie on the counter and grabbed his arm about to zip tie his hands together to restrain him when he pulled out a knife and slashed at me, narrowly missing my stomach. I punch him in the face and kick his legs out from under him. He goes down, the knife slicing my arm. I hear my son and daughter scream. I kick him in the head and yank the knife away then I zip tie his hands and call Chief. I pull him to his feet and slam him into the counter, holding him there while I wait for backup. "Thank you so much!" The manager says. "All in a day's work." I say smiling. Miranda runs over crying her eyes out. The manager gave me a towel to put on the cut. It wasn't so bad anyway. "I'm okay." I say. "Barely even grazed me. I've seen worse honey." I say, smiling, trying to reassure her. Backup arrives and I scoop up my crying terrified three year old.  "Don't cry baby boy, daddy's okay. It's just a scratch." Sierra hugs me. "I was so scared." We get groceries. The manager said it was on the house for what I did. We head back home. "Please don't do anything like that again. You aren't a cop anymore, and I can't bear the thought of losing you." Miranda gasps crying. I hug her, feeling bad. "I wish I could, baby but I can't just allow it to go on. If I can stop it, I'm gonna." "B-But-" "No buts, baby." I say, resting my hands on her shoulders. "I was a cop before I met you and I'm a cop after." "You're retired!" "But the blue blood flows through my veins either way." She looks at the ground trying not to cry more. I hug her tight. "Look I'll never take on anything I can't handle. I promise." She wipes the tears from her beautiful angelic face. "I love you." She says. I smile and kiss her. "I love you too."
