Childhood Memory (Finn Shelby)

Part 17

Finn, Elsie and Polly were seated at the table eating their breakfast. Finn had finished his and looked nervous as he kept fidgeting and glancing up at Elsie. "Finn are you okay?" Elsie asked the boy, Polly peered over the paper she was reading and looked at the two young adults in front of her.

"Yeah, I'm fine" Finn said in what he thought was a reassuring tone, Elsie huffed and returned to her food.

"I know there's something wrong Finn" Elsie said nonchalantly, moving a small bit of bacon around her plate before stabbing it and plopping it into her mouth, "you're never this nervous"

"It's just, Tommy's having a charity ball tonight and if it isn't an inconvenience. And if you agree-" Finn stumbled over his words as he rambled.

Polly spoke up for the boy, feeling sorry that he was a nervous wreck "what he's trying to say Elsie, is that he wants you to go with him"

"Do you want me to go with you?" Elsie asked the boy for confirmation. Finn nodded, "then I'll be happy to go with you" Finn looked relieved as she said that.

"Great, I'll pick you up later" Finn stood up and went over to her and kissed her cheek before leaving the house to go to work.

"He still hasn't asked you to be his girlfriend?" Polly questioned.

"No, I think we're taking it slow or something since we haven't spoken for two years and now we're more er... Romantically involved?" Elsie said, "I don't know what we are, Pol, but I think we're both fine with that"

"Have you two fucked yet?" She then questioned.

Elsie shook her head rapidly, a blush forming on her face, "I'm not ready for that."

"Shame, you and Finn would make beautiful children" Polly then got up as well and walked out of the house.

Elsie was left to her own devices in the house, she hadn't ever thought about having kids, she always focused on the horses and she thought of their foals but never considered having her own children.

She decided to drop that train of thought and decided on what she was going to wear that evening. She eventually settled on a light purple dress which she had gotten from London when she was coming back from an unsuccessful horse auction. She hadn't worn it yet so she thought it'll be a perfect occasion for it.

Polly came home telling Elsie to start getting ready so Finn could pick her up. She got dressed and smoothed it out, Polly kindly did her hair for her and Elsie did her own makeup.

Finn came back dressed in a suit with a wonky bow tie. Elsie walked down the stairs and saw him, he beamed at her. "Elsie, you look great" he said as she walked in front of him.

"You do too" she told him, she then reached out and redid his bow tie, "sorry, it looked a mess" she said, drawing her hands back and clasping them in front of her.

"No, worries" he told her, "come on, let's go before we're late" he led her towards the car and she spotted Arthur and John in the back.

"Hi" she waved to the pair, "isn't Esme going? Or Linda?" She said after getting in the car.

"Nah, Esme's pregnant and isn't feeling too good so she's staying behind" John said with a dismissive frown.

"Linda's not going either" Arthur said.

They drove to the place the ball was taking place at and they all walked in together, Finn held Elsie's waist with one arm and was smoking from the other.

"Turns out both of your partners lied" Elsie giggled, pointing to the two ladies. Arthur and John ignored her and made their way to the front of the room.

A man came around with a tray of drinks and Elsie took two. She sipped on one and passed one to Finn who had to let go of her waist to accept it. "This place is magnificent" Elsie said, looking around the room.

"Yeah, it is" Finn said , looking straight at Elsie.

She scoffed looking down as a blush formed on her cheeks, "you're not even looking"

Finn glanced up and looked at the room and back at Elsie "so beautiful"

"You are so cheeky" she said, playfully slapping his chest.

There was a announcement giving a toast for the King. Elsie and Finn raised a glass but Finn got punched by his brother telling to stop.

"Dinner is served" the Mc said after the toast.

Everyone started piling into the dining area and Finn was about to lead Elsie in when a shout of "For Angel!" And a gunshot rung through the air.

Elsie got pulled into Finn as Finn watched as Grace got shot in Tommy's arm and John tackling the man who shot her. Finn's brothers started to beat the crap out of the assailant, Finn passed Elsie to Ada as he joined his brothers.

Elsie, even though she didn't know Grace that well, cried for her and cried for Tommy. She knew Thomas had gone through a lot and the death of his wife just brought it all tumbling down.
