"Don't be ridiculous!" Mitch barks. He is the first to stand. "Demons aren't real! That's like common knowledge!"
Nobody dared defy him. Because maybe we all wanted to believe him. That maybe demons aren't real. That we're just hearing things outside. Someone could have spiked that punch with LSD drugs. This could all be some twisted hallucination. A bad trip.
Except...something tells me this isn't. That this was all happening in real-time. It feels way too vivid to be some drug trip. The fact that we're all experiencing the same thing further strengthens my theory. But there is a slight chance of all this being another illusion. Just like when the ground melted. Everything felt real, but it was all made-up.
Now I wonder...was the illusion just some spell? It's definitely possible. And now that rises another question. Who would do such a thing? That gray-skinned freak definitely seems like the odd man out. Was it that him? If that's the case, then why? What's his game here?
I approach Sammie. She happens to be far enough. So that the others won't catch on to what I'm about to say.
"Sammie, what about my father and his crew? Aren't they supposed to be coming back? They have been gone for almost a day." I tell her.
"No clue. For all we know, this could all be another illusion. Yet...I get the feeling this one is real." She says, strangely calmer than how she was a mere moment ago. "But...what I do know is that we're surrounded. We have to do something. Or else everyone here is gonna wind up-"
"Don't say it." I cut her off. Afraid of what she was gonna say. The word death always reminds me of her. Just even hearing it is enough to plunge me back onto the day she died. The patchy memories. The metallic odor of her blood. Her dying face which will always be forever forged into my mind. God, just thinking about it makes me sick to my stomach!
"You don't think demons are real, do you?" It was Cadence, her once confident eyes now were rippling with fear. Asking both Tammy and Sophie that question. Sophie ducks her head. But Tammy simply just stares at her. "I mean, his sister could be just making that up. Just to mess with our heads."
She laughs. But it was a nervous one.
"Then what about about the growling?" Sophie whimpers.
"Maybe we're just hearing things." Cadence shrugs.
"I doubt it." Tammy says in a stern tone.
"Is y'all serious right now? Don't tell me you all believe this BS?!" Mitch snaps. He turns an angry eye towards us. But his glare is meant for Sammie. "You've always struck me as the weird type. The way you dress. That anti-social attitude of yours. Even the way you treat others. Now that I look back on it, why did I ever like you to begin with? You're just a deranged bitch all around!"
"Don't call my sister a bitch!" I growl, balling up my fist. Before we could approach each other, something bangs hard against the door. Another hard bash and the door nearly comes off the hinges.
But in-between the crack of the door, stared back a massive yellow eye. Blinking at us from within the darkness of the night.
Nobody dared to make a muscle. All of my anger vanishes. Just like that, as we all stared at the impossible.
"Barricade the door!" Tammy shouts. We don't second guess her. There is simply no time for it. Frankie, Cadence, and I rush to the nearest couch. We huddle up near one end of the sofa. Then struggle to push what felt like a sumo wrestler. Using every burning ounce of muscle in us. We manage to slide the couch in front of the door. Buying us more time.
