"We were never meant to belong."
Those words bounce through my skull on repeat. I never fully understood what Tammy told me back there. When she was talking about I didn't belong in this world. She sounded like there was some grave mistake in bringing me here. But from what I can recall. Tammy was the one who came to me first. Back to that house party.
Man, how long has it been? A few days? Weeks maybe.
There is no for sure answer to this. Since time works differently in the world of demons. Back on Earth. It could have been years since we've last been there.
"How much farther do we have to go?" Sophie yells, still running along beside Frankie and me.
"Just a little less than a mile." I reply, taking a quick glance at the book. The writing is still presentable. Even though the words are in a different tongue. A language unlike any other. I use magic to decipher them. "Also, the location of the pillar is near a castle. So there might be more demons inside."
"Probably keeping guard outside too." Frankie tacks on.
"You may be right about that." Sophie agrees.
"I'm sure as hell hope not." I scoff. For some reason, it came off the tongue in a way that made us chuckle out loud.
I can still faintly hear it. The sounds of blades clashing against each other. Screams of the dozens of demons dying. At the hands of the ruthless hunters. From here, it sounds like they are putting up a good fight. My only concern is that I hope everyone makes it out alive.
Wishful thinking. I should know better than that. My first experience with demons has it drilled into my skull. That these battles-more like massacres-come with a large side of death. There's no avoiding the matter. My gut tells me that one of them might die.
The question is...who? who will be the next person we mourn after? Just how much more of this can we take...before we break?
"Everyone stop!" Frankie cries out. We all follow his command. Without even second guessing it. All six pairs of eyes stare at the portal opening up in front of us. A lime green window. Perfectly smooth like glass. The most stable window I have ever seen.
"Could it be the work of demons?" Frankie squints.
"No, only mages can open windows like this." I tell him.
"Man, I hope you're right about this." Frankie says, voice tight with tension.
Out comes a clumsy person. He stumbles his way in. Almost falling flat on his ass. But he catches himself, and looks at all three of us. His grin grows wider once he singles me out.
"Mitch?!" Frankie and I howl in unison.
"In the flesh." He says in a cocky tone.
The window behind him shatters. Forever closing our window of opportunity back home. Not like it matters at this point. We came here to do a mission, and I'm not going back. Until the job is done.
