The red string of fate is what binds soulmates together. It may tangle or stretch, but it shall never break. That is... Unless two people, who aren't soulmates, get married. Their strings detach from their, real, soulmates and join with their wedded partner. This means that their soulmates will die as soon as their strings turn black and break.

This rule is taught to all people when they reach the age of 16.

Some people are chosen by the goddess, Aphrodite, to be able to see the string. These people are chosen because of their kind and selfless personality. John and Maria are one of these few people. They are lucky enough to be best friends with their soulmates. But not lucky enough to be lovers, for their soulmates are already in a relationship, with each other. Maria and John knew this, they've tried countless times to win their hearts but failed every time. Eliza and Alexander truly believed they were soulmates, despite their best friend's pleads that they were not. They never listened.

-

John walked along the streets. It was a chilly autumn day; the roads were covered in orange leaves and the trees danced to the rhythm of the wind. John looked ahead of him as he buried his face into his scarf. He had just went to the shop for some Cup Noodles, because he's a broke university student, and was making his way back to the dorms.

He stopped next to a Starbucks and pulled out his phone.

GayTurtle: U want some coffee??

HamSandwich: Yes!

GayTurtle: Kind?

HamSandwich: Black

GayTurtle: Ew ok

He chuckled and went inside to order. Soon enough, he got his, and Alex's coffee and continued to walk back to the dorms.

-

"Honey, I'm home!" John yelled as he barged in the dorm.

"I'm so glad!" Alex yelled back. He chuckled and placed Alex's coffee on the desk, next to him. It was completely platonic, but John didn't mind, it was their thing. He drank his coffee quickly and collapsed on his bed. Alex checked the time and closed his laptop. "The gang is meeting up at The Schuyler's dorm, me and Eliza have an announcement. You should come." Alex said walking up to the door and opening it.

"I'll be there in just a minute." John groaned. Alex chuckled and made his way to the Schuyler dorm.

John laid in bed, for a few minutes, before grabbing his phone from the desk and running out of the room, to the Schuyler dorm. It was only a floor below them, so John didn't bother to catch the elevator. As soon as he knocked on the door, he was greeted by an enthusiastic Peggy Schuyler.

"Jack, thank god! Alex and Eliza won't stop flirting and it's driving me insane!" She cried, dramatically, before dragging John inside without letting him have time to respond. "Oh my god! Get a room!" Peggy yelled at the couple, making out on the couch.

John couldn't lie; the sight, of the two, hurt him. John had a crush on Alex the first time he laid eyes on him. But John knew not to get in his way. They were soulmates. They would still end up together, right?

The couple chuckled and Peggy let out a sigh of relief.

"The others should be here any moment now-" Alex started, before being interrupted by a loud yell.

"Hercules Mulligan!" Of course. A dramatic entrance as always. The almighty Hercules Mulligan. He was shortly followed by; Lafayette, Aaron, Theodosia and, last but not least, Maria.

"Speak of the devil..." Alex muttered, making the rest of them laugh. Everyone took a seat on the floor as their eyes were fixated on the couple on the couch.

"This better be good. I missed a, perfectly good, trip to Starbucks just for this." Peggy complained.

"Oh it's good alright." Eliza replied, leaving the group confused, and slightly concerned. John and Maria listened intently, curious on what their soulmates were going to say. Eliza and Alex looked at each other before turning back to the group.

"We're engaged!" They announced in unison.

"What!?" Everyone, but John and Maria, replied. They were too shocked that they couldn't even process what had just happened. They turned to each other and gave each other a look of fear. The others began to ask the couple questions about the wedding and John and Maria snuck out of the room, not wanting to get anymore hurt.

They each went to their dorms and collapsed on their beds. Tears were streaming down their faces like and endless waterfall. What were they supposed to do now? They were completely lost and anxious. Anxious of what could happen next. Are they just supposed to count their last days in this world? Millions of thoughts raced through their minds. They were fully aware of the side effects of the soulmate concept, and they were scared. No. Scared wasn't even close to capturing what they were feeling at the time. They were absolutely petrified. All they could do now was cry themselves to sleep. They were completely and utterly,

helpless...
