"It started with my father..." Dawn paused nervously, he had never shared this story before. Elaina's eyes were locked on him, urging him to continue. "...He was born with a rare talent that could tell the future. It was extremely accurate, and he took pride in it. His obsession was towards a vision he had when I was born, though I was never told what it was." He sighed as the memories flooded in. "When I was around 6, my healing talent began to form, and my father was very excited. He had already favored me over my sister because I looked like his late mother... my grandmother. So when a rare talent began to form, he got... protective."

Dawn shifted a little, bringing a concerned look on Elaina's face, stretching her scar a bit. "Then when I was about 8, I began to have these dreams. The same dream over and over for weeks. It was always the same thing, I was on a hill, and there was a girl I didn't recognize calling me a name that wasn't mine. She was always smiling at me when she spoke, but I never remembered anything she said..." He looked over to Elaina, as she sat across from him listening, not daring to interrupt. Why was he sharing this? Wasn't he here to learn more about her? No. He WANTED to share this. He'd been waiting for it his whole life. "Naturally, my father thought I was forming a second talent, and his hold on my life tightened. Saying how valuable I was going to be when I was older. Then came the nightmares. For weeks at a time, the very same girl on the hill was now being ..." He felt his fist tightening in fear and rage. "... She was being torn apart on a medical table by strange people and devices..." Hot tears ran down his face, but he didn't care. "The worst part... the honest to god worse part was that I couldn't even remember what she looked like... here I was seeing some poor souls future and I couldn't even find them to warn them... Then I stopped seeing her all together." A cool hand touched his fisted hand gently. Dawn blinked away some tears as he focused on Elaina. Her face was hard to read, but he didn't feel pity from her, so he finished. " My poor mother was so destroyed by how my father had brushed off what I was going through and how he was treating me and my sister, she divorced him shortly after the dreams left. When he lost custody he had gotten very drunk, and apparently had on last thing to say to my mother as we left: 'those two will never be anything more than a Demon's trophy pet and an oversized calculator!' Those words are buried into both of our minds..."

He looked into Elaina's now rage filled eyes. "So that's why we're both determined to prove the bastard wrong and become Protectors." He was startled by Elaina suddenly standing to her feet. Her eyes seemed to be on fire, and it both excited and terrified him.

"What can I do to help?" Her voice was like a clear roar. A toothy grin spread across her face. Dawn realized at that moment that Elaina was here to stay. He grinned back at her. Whether or not he met too, he had just gained an alliance in this crazy city, and he was going to need all the help he could get.

The room began to smell of smoke.
