I'm not sure how long it's been, but there was always this boy that I'd see literally everywhere. I would either be on my way to school (mostly on my way home), and I would see him.
The day I did notice him, it was pouring. Good thing I had brought an umbrella along with me. I was walking home from school, and, on my way, decided to stop by the shrine near my house.
When I had gotten there, I noticed I wasn't alone. There was a boy sitting against the walls of the shrine. He was drenched. It was weird that he had noticed me, but he his gaze immediately went on the umbrella. He had the school uniform on. I think I've seen him around a few times at school and I think on the train. He's the boy from school.
"Hi." He said awkwardly, glancing at my umbrella.
"Hi." I said. I didn't know what to say. I didn't really know this guy.
"It just started pouring suddenly right?" He laughed. Sure he laughs, but I feel like something was off about it. "You ride the same train as me. I've seen you around a few times... I see you have an umbrella."
Does this guy really think I'm going to share an umbrella?
Well, he's not wrong.
"Here." I opened my backpack and pulled out my gym shirt. I handed it to him. "Dry yourself. Don't worry, it's clean."
"Thanks." He took it and began drying his hair. "You haven't worn it?"
"Only once." I smiled. He looked at me with a weirded out expression. It made me laugh. He handed me back the shirt.
"Thanks again." He repeated.
"So you need to get home? I have room for two." I offered.
"You know you girls shouldn't just offer sharing your umbrella to people you don't know." Says the boy who can't get home. He sighed as he said that. I noticed he sighs a lot.
"Since you say that, good luck getting home." I waved as I began to walk away. He began calling after me.
***
"Thank you for sharing your umbrella." The boy thanked me. He had started calling after me and took my offer. I didn't intend on leaving him.
"Anything for someone that goes to my school." I said. "I think I've seen you around before."
"Me too. I'm Mabuchi Kou." He introduced himself. Right! His name was Kou, that's what I forgot.
"I'm Kazehaya Ryouma." I said. That's a coincidence. A guy with a girl's name meeting a girl with a guy's name. "Sorry, my mother expected a guy."
"That's funny." He laughed. It sounded so forced. There's a feeling of loneliness behind it.
"What class are you in?" I asked, trying to make light of a conversation.
"I'm part of the advanced classes." He answered. No wonder I've never seen him around that much. This guy must be really smart. "But I might not be anymore since my grades are slipping now a days. My brother's been pissing me about it."
"I can relate." I said. I mean, somewhat. My older brothers just scold me once in a while. It's not like Mabuchi kun's can be that bad. "How many siblings do you have?"
"I have just one annoying hell of an older brother." He answered.
"Lucky. I have three older brothers and one annoying brat." I sighed. I'm the only girl, unfortunately.
"Oh, why don't they walk home with you?" Mabuchi kun asked.
"Two of them are both in clubs, and my eldest brother is a teacher at our school." I told him. He can be annoying as hell.
"Really? My brother too." He said surprised.
"Really?" I repeated. There was a Mabuchi sensei at our school? I don't think I've heard of one.
"Yeah, but he has a different last name." Mabuchi said. "His is Tanaka."
"Oh! Tanaka sensei." So he's Tanaka sensei's younger brother? But Mabuchi kun's so stone faced, and Tanaka sensei is so... Lively, I guess.
"I think I've heard of your brothers before. Haru and Takashi, right?" He asked.
"Yeah. They're quite popular compared to me." I said. "Ren can be popular among the female students too, but I'm worried it'll get him into trouble."
"Same goes for my idiot brother." He sighed.
The two of us kept walking and talking. Mabuchi kun is actually really nice if you get through those mean expressions. Though, he has a habit of faking some laughs and smiles.
It's good that we passed his house first, but I wouldn't have mind letting him use my umbrella the rest of the way. It's just rain. Letting loose wouldn't kill me.
"Thanks for sharing your umbrella Kazehaya." Mabuchi kun thanked me.
"No problem!" I said as he began going inside. "Hey Mabuchi kun, is it alright if I give you some advice?"
"Uh, sure?"
"The fake smiles and laughs don't suit you." I smiled, beginning to walk away. Sure it was rude, but it was true. "Bye bye!"
He stood at his doorway, looking like I had saw right through him. Well, he's kinda easy to read. Mabuchi Kou was his name? He's interesting, but it's not like I was going to converse with him again. He was just the boy from school.
