So as Derek walks in, I remember thinking 'I knew this was gonna happen.' Right before I blacked out despite the fluid drip.
"Meredith!". Someone screams over me.
"Code blue, get a damn crash cart in here!". A female voice yells.
I turn my head slightly, and let out a slight groan. And then black.
DEREKS PERSPECTIVE
All I could think was that I failed her. I wasn't there and Cristina was. I should have gone with her. She's in a critical condition, and I can't raise four kids on my own. They need their mother. She needs to live.
Cristina and Bailey walk in, with a stressed look on their faces.
"We did everything we could, " One of them said. "And it seemed to be just enough. She's going to live. She's in the ICU. She's still a critical patient, so you have to be gentle, and she is in a bubble because she acquired a deep infection, presumably from the twins somehow. You can visit her in a little bit. But you can check on her through the glass if you'd like. " Cristina offered.
All I can do is nod. "I--" "Thank you Dr Bailey, and thank you Cristina. I owe both of you something. I can't thank either of you enough. How long will her recovery be? Nevermind that, she'll live. That's all I care about. Cristina, can you and Alex grab the kids now and tell them that they'll be with you guys for a few days. Can you do that? I just need to be here with Mer right now. They need to be well cared for. And I-We can trust you guys. " I say.
"Of course. Would you like to see Mer now?". She says and leads me up to the ICU. I look through the glass, at my wife, and see tubes and wires and needles sticking out all over her arms and hands. I sigh with relief, knowing that she'll live.
I sit down against the wall, and Owen Hunt walks up, the head of Trauma.
"I heard about a miscarriage trauma? Was it Meredith Grey?". He asked cautiously.
"Yeah. She'll that thankfully be fine. I can't believe this happened. But we totally didn't need six kids. That would have been a crazy house. We still have to add another bedroom for Emilia and Kate, because right now they're still sharing with Bailey. Thanks for your concern. " I said to him.
"Yeah, anytime. So how do the different branches work around here? I just started here a week or so ago. " Owen asks.
"Basically, trauma stays in the Pit, and the ORs for trauma surgeries. Neuro, ortho, general, cardio and peds are all in the ORs and the Pit when we get paged there. Plastics is only paged to the Pit when there are burn victims, or for people who request the plastic surgeon. " I explain.
"So Meredith is..."
"General. Cristina is cardio, Alex, her fiancé, is peds, my sister, Amelia is neuro, Callie is ortho, Jackson is plastics, his wife April is trauma, she's the redhead down there. My ex wife, Addison Montgomery, is OB. She works down in LA with some old friends. " I spill.
"Cool. So how long have you been married, you and Dr Grey?". Owen asks.
"A while. About five years, give or take a few months. Anyone in your life?" I ask.
"No, anyone you would recommend?".
"Well, I would say Cristina, but she's engaged. What about my sister, Amelia? She'll be out here soon for a while working on a case with me. I'll introduce you two. You guys would look cute together. " I chuckle.
"Is she nice?". Owen asks.
"She's better than my other sister Nancy. When Meredith, Izzie and Cristina were interns, they called her McBitchy. Which I can understand, because I grew up with her. You'll love Amelia. " I assured him. I look back at Meredith, and see her tossing her head back and forth. Her hand moves up to the intubation tube in her throat. I get up and run to the glass door, my hands aced near my shoulders. "Nurse! Get in there and help her!" I yell at the nurse at the nearest nurses station.
"I'm sorry doctour, but only you are granted permission to enter her bubble. " She tells me.
"Add Dr Owen Hunt, head of Trauma to that list. And Dr Cristina Yang. Thank you. " I say as I race in. "Owen, tell someone to page Cristina to Meredith's room. They'll want to talk. "
"Yes sir. On it. "
I pull on a surgical gown and gloves and a mask.
"Meredith, sweetie. Stop pulling at that. Here," I say as I pull her frantic hands away from it, and pull the tube out so she can breathe comfortably. "Meredith do you want some water?" I ask.
She nods her head and reaches out for the water cup. I shake my head, and she frowns, and I guide my hand with the cup to her lips and give her a sip from the straw. She gulps it all down.
"Meredith, can you say something? " I ask.
"Ouch." She mutters.
A young Asian woman spread at the door. "Meredith, thank gods you're okay. Zola's been worried. Should I keep her with Alex or bring her up?"
"With Alex. I'm fine Cristina. It wasn't too bad. I just bled a little too much, and was dehydrated today, so that was also part of it. And I didn't have any lunch. " Meredith explains.
MEREDITH'S PERSPECTIVE
I could barley focus with everyone crowding around me. There was Derek, and Cristina, of course, but there was also this red headed guy who looked a bit Irish, and a slightly tough face, but caring.
"Derek, who is the other guy in here?". I asked confusedly.
"Right, Meredith, my love, this is Dr Owen Hunt, head of Trauma. He works with April down in the Pit. Owen, this is my amazing wife, Meredith Grey. Her sister, Lexie Grey, died in the plane crash a few years ago." I said, lowering my voice for all of us here. "Te three of us were all there, and so was Mark Sloan, my best friend, almost my brother. The hospital is named after them. "
"I'm so sorry, for all of your losses. I can imagine. When I was in Iraq I lost all of my squad in a bombing. They were like family to me while I was there. I know what it's like to lose family. " Owen says, explaining himself.
