coffee talk
"So where are you from?" Josh asked as he looked at the girl across the booth from him. She hummed in response, obviously she let her mind wander off and barely heard his question. "I asked where you were from." He repeated it with a smile.
"Oh!" realization hit her and stuttered out, "L.A."
"You're kidding?" Jake raised a brow with a grin, "We were just there! Weren't we Josh?" he asked as he gently slapped his brothers arm.
"Yeah... ever been to one of our shows maybe?"
"No, I spent most of my time zoning off, although Sade did send me a couple of your songs. Pretty good." She smiled at the truth. She thought they were talented from what she had heard, it wasn't much but she knew potential and talent when she saw it.
"Oh really? That's good, if you're free next week, we have a show coming up. We can get you two backstage." Josh suggested, hoping that she'd say yes.
"Oh we'll definitely be there!" Sade beamed.
"Coffees and bagels for Sade!" The barista at the counter set down the disposable cups and wrapped warm bagels before turning around to tend to his other orders.
"Jake help me with the food yeah?" Sade gestured towards the front counter. Jake nodded in response before pushing himself out of the booth, Sade behind.
"Soooo" Josh dragged out, "How do you like it here so far?"
Val had been leaning against the window, the sunlight perfectly shinning in to draw attention to her brown eyes. She had a habit of zoning out, always in thought about something- everything.
"This is all I've seen so far," referring to the shop and others around. "I've been here for a little over a day but yesterday was meant for cleaning and unpacking the essentials. So I can't really give you a solid opinion just yet."
"Well maybe I can show you around. What made you move out here?"
"Well.. Sade is my best friend. I haven't seen her in years, so when she invited me out here" she let out a sigh. "I just couldn't resist, the timing of it all was just perfect, a change for once."
"Oh why's that?" He began to grow curious.
Val hesitated with her mouth slightly open, what could she say without giving too much away to a complete stranger. She began to overthink. Why would he want to know? A change is a change, no matter how big or small. Sometimes we all just need a change of scenery. She thought. Why-
"Here you go guys, I even brought the creamer incase for you Val." Sade smiled as her and Jake set their orders down, scooting back into the old squeaky booth.
Saved by the fucking best, Val thought. "No it's fine, I'll take it black." she said before taking a careful sip of her coffee. She used to love her drink sweetened but after everything it seemed like- at least to her- she couldn't enjoy the sweet things in life. Things didn't have a meaning and something as simple as drinking black coffee made her feel something. The bitterness.
The three friends caught up, the boys briefly talking about what went on on the bus, Sade and their other friends- some still doing theatre in college.
