car rooftop bonding

They had gotten to the park a couple minutes ago, sitting in the car as music softly played. It wasn't awkward or anything, a comfortable silence as Val stared out onto the snow covered playground, Josh trying his hardest to not stare too long at her.

She began to suddenly feel small waves of anxiety and began to feel in her pockets, cursing herself when she realized she only brought her lighter. Her eyes made their way to the car's cup holders where she found Josh had a carton.

"Do you mind if I..?" She nodded towards the small box, Josh immediately stammered out a yes, surprised she had the same unhealthy habit, grabbing one for himself as she stepped out- obviously she wasn't going to fill his car with smoke.

Josh jumped out as well, telling her they could sit on his roof, take advantage of the Michigan night sky.
She was reluctant but he insisted, the pair letting their feet rest on the car's trunk as they sat on the roof. Cigarettes dangling from both mouths, she brought out her lighter, lazily lighting hers as Josh made a small noise as he gently nudged her. She nodded as she reached over, incredibly close as she let her lighter do it's work. Josh held his breath while she did, focusing on her long curly lashes, almost afraid of moving for those few seconds.

"Alright so what's up?" A small smile played on her lips as she shifted in her place, facing him somewhat properly. She took a much needed long drag, holding it in-between her two fingers.

"Drowning in holiday cheer." Josh chuckled as he took a drag himself, exhaling through side pursed lips. "You?"

"Eh not much, like I said nothing but work keeping me occupied." She shrugged, bringing the stick up to her lips.

"We've only hung out once since you started, fill me in." He grinned as he ashed his cigarette, bringing it back up for another drag.

"Well obviously I spent christmas at home in bed." She chuckled as he furrowed his brows, interested as she continued. "Work is fun I guess. Henry and Calum are always up to something stupid. Mariah is that mom friend who always has the best snacks. Uh.." Her eyes gazed around as she thought of anything else. "Oh and my dad might be coming up for new years, that's about it I guess."

"Why don't you go home?" Josh asked as he ashed his cigarette once again into the snow, "But that's cool, at least he'll be around for that? Can we meet him?"

"Eh we're just not big on holidays." Val lazily shrugged as she took one last long drag, tossing the small bud into the snow, stuffing her hands into her jacket. "I mean if he does then yeah sure, he tends to get along with everyone he meets."

"Well I hope we all make an acceptable lasting impression." He grinned as he reached over, another ash.

"So let's play a game, get to know each other better yeah?" Val smiled as she brought her legs up to sit completely criss-cross.

"Don't we already know each other-"

"Not like that. Like actual things besides hanging out, I'll start!" She giggled as she asked the most simple question. "Favorite color?"

"Green, nature easy." He nodded, "You?"

"Red. Hm, hobbies?"

"Film. I like learning about the tricks too. "

"Ohhh!" Her eyes flew up with interest, a smirk appearing as well. "Any chance I can see em?"

"One day." He winked.

They continued for a bit, asking the most simple questions. The pair now laid on the car roof, shoulders touching as his legs dangled, his ankles crossing; Val only let one leg dangle while the other was just there resting flat. It was nice, the park was dimly lit so it didn't interfere as much with the night sky. They shared the same birth month, both loved learning film details that others would find boring, like certain angles and such; she brought up the whole "Donnie Darko being filmed in 28 days like in the movie" thing. They began to drift off into story telling, funny moments from their childhood.
