workplace altercations
Christmas flew by and the friends hung out when the boys felt they had spent enough time with family members.
The Kiszkas were just as surprised as Sam and Jake first were when they saw Emily at the front door. They didn't know the full story but knew it was for the best and out of respect, they didn't ask for more details.
Val contemplated going home for the holidays to check on her dad but he reassured her it was fine and that maybe during New Years he'd make the trip. They hadn't been big on the holidays so to them it wasn't a hard thing to spent holidays either alone or doing nothing.
"Dad are you sure?" Val asked as she chewed on her bottom lip.
"Absolutely. Focus on your job and have a wonderful time. Tell Sade I said hello will ya?"
"I will pa, but are you sure? I can probably spend a couple days, I know they like me so maybe they can give me a pass."
"You just started so don't even think about it mija. Maybe New Year's I'll spent it up there with you." She could imagine him smiling as he spoke. She missed her father and worried about how he was doing on his own sometimes.
"How's Bubs?" She chuckled as she thought of her dog. Bubbles was his full name and she remembered her family laughing at the name she has given him when she was just four. It was the first thing that came to her tiny mind and it stuck. Years and years of friendship, the cutest thing she had ever seen; she was heartbroken that she couldn't bring him along. He was old and clung around her dad.
"Ah well he's eating alright." he let out a hearty chuckle as he continued, "Still loves looking for scraps and uh likes going into the empty rooms." He went silent.
"That's good." Val gulped as she nodded, understanding what he meant. "Nice to know he hasn't forgotten."
Her dad tsked, as her lips formed into a thin grin on the other side of the line. Any mention always went awkward.
He broke the silence, "I have to run a couple errands mija. I'll talk to you later okay?"
"No yeah, yeah," she sighed. "I get it."
"Cuídate." (Take care.)
"You too dad."
*click.*
Val polished the window and fixed the display, that little detail from her dad was enough to set her back emotionally. She avoided her feelings around the holidays but it was enough to remind her. She didn't mention to Sade or the others, not that they even had the slightest idea of what she had been through. She knew if she told her best friend that would cause another breakdown and she didn't have the energy for another one.
*tap tap*
Val jumped up from where she was leaning, putting down the board she was holding and spotted Emily waving back at her. Confused she wiped her hands on the towel before quickly making her way outside. The cold air made her shiver as her hoodie wasn't enough and her thick jacket was somewhere behind the counter, hoping whatever Emily wanted-she'd be quick.
"Hey what's up?" She nodded as she crossed her arms, a cold breeze made her want to curse.
"I just wanted to talk to you. Woman to woman, you know?"
