A week had quickly went past. It was 9:00 am in the morning, and Monique held an umbrella over her head to block out the pouring rain, as she slowly strolled towards David's company building.

Even though she had started working there only a week ago, there were many times were she felt like quitting, but one of the reasons that held her back was that she didn't want to disappoint David. He had gone out of his way to voluntarily give her a job and help her with her money issues, so she just couldn't find it in herself to quit. She was never good at expressing her gratitude and she wasn't a delight to be around most of the time, but despite all that, he didn't seem to mind.

As she was about to cross the road, she heard the sound of her phone ringing from her handbag, and she slowly reached inside to bring it out. She glanced down at the Caller Id to see that it was James; one of the men who she used to voluntarily sleep with for money. It was also because of him that she met David.

"Hello?" Monique answered, looking to her left, whilst clutching onto the umbrella.

"Mo, baby... I've been meaning to call you" the sound of his drunken and croaky voice, immediately filled her ears. Causing her to cringe. She could never stand the sound of his voice, it always made her feel a negative mix of emotions. "Why don't you stop by tonight, I missed you".

Monique quickly rolled her eyes away before opening her mouth to reply. "I'm done with all that, James. Please don't call me again".

"You're done?" he laughed, sending an uncomfortable, cold shiver down her spine. "I heard David Morris offered you a job at his company... look if you wanted a job sweetheart you could've asked me, you didn't have to sleep with somebody else for it-

"I didn't sleep with him" she hissed quickly cutting him off. "He gave me the job because he wanted to, so just leave me alone James. I'm done".

There was a brief silence over the phone for a brief while. Monique pressed the phone closer to her ears as she heard him sigh and cuss under his breath. "C'mon sweetheart" he cooed. "What the fuck are you talking about?. I'm not done with you yet Monique, I've always had a soft spot for you... so don't push me" he threatened, causing her to quickly arch her brow up.

Not wanting to continue the conversation, she quickly removed the phone from her ear and hung up, before going to cross the street. She glanced down at his phone to see him calling again, and she quickly declined it and turned her phone off before throwing it back inside her handbag.

As she arrived inside the building, she instantly received her usual unwelcoming stares from the people, who always seemed to whisper about her from the distance. It was clear a lot of people weren't happy with the fact that David had hired her as the new secretary, but she could care less about what people thought of her. Due to the life she's lived at only 23 years of age, that was the one quality she was very thankful for.

She shot several people a hard and stern gaze, causing them to quickly look away from her, before walking over to her desk. She wasn't all that good at this secretary job, but she was slowly learning day by day.

As she was about to turn on the computer to setup, she heard someone clear their throat, and her eyes slowly travelled up to see one of the staff; Lauren staring down at her. Lauren was your typical stuck-up and pretentious white girl, who lived to please the people around her, and as you can guess, Monique wasn't very fond of her.

"Can I help you?" Monique asked, not bothering to hide the impoliteness in her voice.

Lauren rolled her eyes away and muttered something under her breath, before throwing some files on her desk. "Here's all the details for all of Mr Morris' clients. Familiarise yourself with all of them by the end of next week and I need you to send the weekly reports to the ones highlighted at the bottom" she explained briefly.
