It was still dark when I felt someone gripping my shoulder, and shaking me awake.
Sitting up, I saw it was Frypan.
"Rise and shine, girl. We've got cooking to do." He said, his voice deep.
I stood up and followed Frypan to his kitchen, still wearing my clothes from the night before. There were no clothes fitted for my gender, so I would have to wait a week until the supplies came up.
I had to be careful to not wake everybody else up, because I slept away from all the other Gladers. Alby had arranged things that way, because not everybody was comfortable sleeping next to me.
"Why do we have to be up so early anyways?" I whispered.
Frypan rolled his eyes. "We're the ones making the food, slinthead. We have to be up way before everyone else so we have time to prepare it."
"But why don't we just make it the night before?" I pondered.
"That's not how it works Greenie! Just go with the flow, don't try to shuck things up." He said, raising his voice.
As we entered the kitchen, Frypan immediately started telling me rules. He explained where all the food is, what was off limits, and cooking rules in general. He was very specific to always follow his orders, because meals had to be prepared exactly how he wanted them to be.
The whole time I just nodded, and didn't even bother to say anything.
As we got to cooking, Frypan made bacon, while I made pancakes. I tried to follow his instructions, but I ended up changing the recipe a bit. I didn't know why, but I had this feeling in my gut that I should do it differently.
While we cooked, I took the time to really look at Frypan. He was well built, dark skinned, and pretty muscular. He actually looked a lot like Alby, except Alby didn't have a beard.
'Maybe they're related..' I thought to myself.
I shook my head and continued flipping the pancakes.
When they were done, I loaded them onto large serving plates and brought them to the tables.
They turned out light and fluffy looking, better than I thought they would. But when Frypan saw them, he didn't approve.
"What did you do?!" He shouted at me, the anger showing on his face. I kept calm.
"I made them how I felt was right. I'm sure it won't kill the Gladers to have different tasting pancakes for once. Besides, they might like them." I said, and walked back into the kitchen.
---
Soon, Gladers started sitting down at the tables and eating.
To Frypan's surprise, everybody loved my pancakes. Apparently his were always flat and bland, but mine were fluffy and full of texture.
"So, do you still want me to follow your pancake recipe?" I said to Frypan, smirking.
We were in the doorway of the kitchen, watching everyone eat.
He sighed. "Maybe I was wrong, okay? You can alter recipes if you want, but only a little."
I smiled with satisfaction. It felt good to prove someone wrong, especially when everybody thought you were useless.
"Hey Rosa!" I heard a voice call. I looked around, and saw that it was Newt. He motioned for me to go sit with him and Minho.
I looked over at Frypan, and he nodded for me to go.
