I was still dark when I woke up. I wondered why Frypan hadn't come to wake me up yet, I recalled him saying he would for the first week. Then I remembered Newt saying something about a tour.
I decided I could stay in bed a while longer, because everyone else was still sleeping.
As the time passed, I just thought about anything that came to mind. That was when I realized, I didn't know what I looked like.
The thought of it made me a bit upset. I knew I had pale, light skin, but nothing more. I didn't know my age either.
I wondered and wondered until suddenly, Newt was standing over me. "Ready for the tour?" He asked my softly, and I nodded.
I climbed out of bed and followed him outside.
"Alright, so first of all, that's the Homestead." He said, pointing at the building we just came out of. "It's where we all sleep every night, as you know.
I nodded, and we continued on throughout the Glade. I learned that it was divided into four sections. The Deadheads, which was basically a cemetery, The Bloodhouse, where animals are slaughtered, The Homestead, where everybody stays, and The Gardens, where the crops are grown.
We walked around to the back of the Homestead. "And here's the Slammer. It's just our name for the jail." He said, and I nodded.
After a tour of the whole Glade, I realized he hadn't talked about the Maze at all. "Oh, well those giant doors on each wall lead outside to the Maze. But you can never go out there, Rosa. It's too dangerous."
I was confused. "Why? What's so bad about it?" He just shook his head.
"Grievers. They're awful creatures. If they sting you, you could easily die." I nodded, seeing the concern in Newt's eyes.
"So, who are the people that get to go out into the Maze, then?" I asked.
"Runners. It takes a lot to be a Runner." He said, not bothering to talk more about the topic.
"I want to go out there." I said. Newt's eyes widened with shock.
"No. No you don't. You are going to stay here in the Glade, where you're safe. You'll stay in the kitchen with Frypan." He said, and I was mad.
"No, Newt! I will not! I don't think you understand. Everybody underestimates me. That's the whole reason why I'm in the kitchen! I am strong. I could easily take on a challenge. Plus I'm a good runner. Just because I'm a girl, it doesn't mean I can't do what you lot can!" I yelled.
Newt looked offended for a split second, but he immediately had a comeback. "You can't go out there Rosa! You're here because you're important and we need to take care of you-"
"Take care of me? No Newt! No way! Just back off! I can take care of myself, thank you very much!" I spat, and walked away.
---
Our tour had taken up pretty much the entire day, and there was about an hour until supper. I decided to see if Frypan needed any help.
As I approached the kitchen, I was stopped by Minho. "What is it this time?" I asked.
"So I heard you and Newt got in a fight.. Is it true?" He asked.
"It wasn't some brutal fist fight. It was just an argument about my job." I replied, not really wanting to discuss it with Minho.
"What do you mean?" He asked, curious.
"I told him I want to go out into the Maze, and be a Runner." I said, my tone very serious.
