"Nasaan si Mendoza?" Rj asked the nurses at the station. He had arrived a little past 9am.
"Nasa Ward 11 na po..."
"Ah" Rj replied and walked straight into the room.
Rj could already hear some nursery rhymes being sung by the kids. He entered the room and found Nic in a circle with the kids in the far end of the room. Rj went straight for Angelo's bed which was just to the left of the door. Angelo had several tubes and wires attached to his little body so he couldn't really join the group. He contented himself with just sitting on his bed watching. The same scene of a child in bed with Rj approaching and doing his check-up happened with two other patients, Christopher, a boy with food allergies, and Marta, a toddler with high fever.
As Rj bent down to listen to Marta's chest, the little girl reached her hands up. Her mom, who was standing on the other side of the bed, motioned to pick her up but Marta turned toward Rj and said, "...up!" Rj looked at Marta's mom before lifting the little girl off from the bed. Marta had just been admitted the night before so she had had no prior interactions with Rj.
Because of her IV line, they couldn't join the group so they just watched as Nic wound down her 'circle time' with the rest of the kids. "Okay...back to bed...tomorrow ulit..." Nic announced after the last song. The children followed and soon, all the other beds were filled with kids – 8 beds in total. Rj was about to put little Marta down but the little girl clung on. He looked at Nic who 'rescued' him from the situation and took the child in her arms.
When he was done with the other kids, Rj imitated Nic by saying goodbye to each child. In the week after their first team assignment, Rj had loosened up a little bit and smiling a little more.
"Dude, mukhang okay yung team up nyo ni Mendoza ah" Carlo said at lunch.
"Huh?"
"Pare, it's been months since I last saw you wear brighter colored shirts...plus na yung nakangiti ka palagi...may tama ka na kay Mendoza no?"
"Ulol! Ang sungit!"
"At parang ikaw hindi? Let me remind you that the kids still call you Dr. Sungit and kids don't lie..."
"The kids in Ward 11 lang..."
"At proud ka pa?"
"Whatever...wait dude, can I borrow some of Sammy's CDs?"
"Sammy's CDs? Bakit? Di na uso masyado ang CD ngayon..."
"How do you play music for her?"
