Words for those Who Have None

Sometimes praying standardized, recorded prayers is the best way to comfort yourself when you can't find words. Whether you're angry, or sad, or in awe, words can be hard to come by.

One of my favorite prayers to pray is known as the Anima Christi, and I will share it with you in both English and Latin. It is a simple but profoundly powerful prayer.

ENGLISH

Soul of Christ, sanctify me.
Body of Christ, save me.
Blood of Christ, inebriate me.
Water from the side of Christ, wash me.
Passion of Christ, strengthen me.
O good Jesus, hear me.
Within Thy wounds, hide me.
Permit me not to be separated from Thee.
From the wicked foe, defend me.
At the hour of death, call me.
Bid me come to Thee,
That with all the saints I may praise Thee
For ever and ever.
Amen.

LATIN

Anima Christi, sanctifica me.
Corpus Christi, salva me.
Sanguis Christi, inebria me.
Aqua lateris Christi, lava me.
Passio Christi, conforta me.
O bone Iesu, exaudi me.
Intra tua vulnera absconde me.
Ne permittas me separari a te.
Ab hoste maligno defende me.
In hora mortis meae voca me.
Et iube me venire ad te,
Ut cum Sanctis tuis laudem te
in saecula saeculorum.
Amen.

There is something beautiful about just laying down a request for assistance from our Lord. One more fabulous prayer for those who cannot find the words to form their own is the Divine Praises. This one is as it sounds, a song of praise to God for the goodness he is and has given the world.

Blessed be God.
Blessed be His Holy Name.
Blessed be Jesus Christ, true God and true Man.
Blessed be the Name of Jesus.
Blessed be His Most Sacred Heart.
Blessed be His Most Precious Blood.
Blessed be Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar.
Blessed be the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete.
Blessed be the great Mother of God, Mary most Holy.
Blessed be her Holy and Immaculate Conception.
Blessed be her Glorious Assumption.
Blessed be the Name of Mary, Virgin and Mother.
Blessed be St. Joseph, her most chaste spouse.
Blessed be God in His Angels and in His Saints.

Hopefully this gives you some words to start on the days where words are hard. I know I have so many of those days. Falling back on well known prayers is a great way to find comfort.

Love,
