Family Unit
Cairo Knight"I can't do this." Jailah cried, shaking her head.
"Yes, you can and you will." The hand that she held onto; felt as if it was broken but I didn't mind at this point. Anything she needed to get through this. Her legs were held up by two nurses, a doctor sat in front of her opened legs coaching her through the pushes, Mrs. Christians stood on the other side of the bed, wiping away Jailah's sweat.
Apparently, Jailah hadn't coached her doctor before taking a flight from New York to Atlanta. Which was a big no, no for anyone with her kind of pregnancy risk. I wasn't surprised through, Jailah was stubborn as hell so whether or not she got cleared, she'd still think that she could make it through. Unfortunately, that, on top of the other stress did nothing but send her into early labour. Luckily, we were able to get her to the hospital right on time.
Everything after that point just seemed to move so quickly. We went from her screaming in the car, to being rushed from the emergency waiting room up to the delivery unit. After nurses had her prepped and ready to go, she asked for an epidural, but before she got the chance to get one; she had the urge to push. That urge, wasn't her dramatics, but she was crowning and fast. Now, here we are. Just a few pushed away from meeting her son.
"Jailah, we need you to push for us. Your baby is literally right there!" the doctor said. "Just take a deep breath and push for me."
"I can't." she cried out loud; she threw her head back and squeezed my hand once more. "It hurts too bad."
"The faster you push is the faster the pain will be over." One of the nurses gave her a nod. "You got this. Your baby will lose oxygen if you don't do this. Push!"
"I can't!" she screamed, throwing her head back. It seemed as if her boss talks had gone out the window.
The doctor looked over at one of her staff members and whispered for her to get the vacuum. I could tell that they were growing agitated and worried, I understood this baby could be at risk if Jailah didn't comply and just push. "Ms. Christians, we need you to work with us." The doctor pleaded, throwing up her hands with frustration. "Don't you want to see his beautiful face?" she asked but Jailah didn't respond. The doctor just groaned and told her assistant to cancel the vacuum and prepare an E.R. instead. "Get her ready for surgery." The doctor said to the two nurses that held Jailah's legs up.
"Jailah!" Mrs. Christians exclaimed, "You have to do this. you've done it before... c'mon now."
I get that she was in pain but as I looked down at her, I realized, this was more than just the pain. Her tears meant something deeper, Jailah wasn't pushing because she didn't want to push. In her eyes I could tell that she had just given up, she was blaming herself for everything and this right here wasn't the moment for it. "Baby." I leaned down and moved her hair from out of her face. "I get it and I know it hurts, but understand that despite everything; he needs you. You doing this isn't going to hurt Mychal, it's going to hurt this innocent baby."
"I just can't" she sobbed.
"This is not about him, you have a blessing wanting to come into this world, he didn't ask to be brought in the midst of this. okay? that's your son and I'm here... you're not going to be in this alone." she looked at me with tear filled eyes. "I am always going to be here for you and him. Okay?" she nodded, "Now, I need you to stop being a pussy and push." I placed a kiss on her lips, "And yes, I did just call you a pussy." I kissed her again then looked over at the doctor. "She's ready," I said.
"Are you sure? Because we have no more time to waste."
"I'm positive." I held onto Jailah's hand once more than looked deep into her eyes. "We got this." I told her, she nodded once more.
