DEC 23RD, 2018 - GWEN AND DAVID'S APARTMENT
Gwen's birthday was awful. The baby was crying, her brother's wife was being a bitch, and her parents were stuck in traffic and couldn't make it to their place on time. Max brought all his friends over, which doubled her annoyance with the day because it was supposed to just be family.
Max argued. "Nikki and Neil are family though."
"Yes, Max, I understand that. But do they know my parents? No. Do they make my parents confused and uncomfortable? Yes. They can stay for now, but next time check with me before inviting them," Gwen scolded through a smile and gritted teeth.
Max rolled his eyes and joined Neil and Nikki on the couch. He sat down at a perfect time.
"How do you two know Gwenny?" Gwen's mother asked to Nikki and Neil. She sounded like the stereotypical old woman.
Neil sat up straight, in order to make a good impression. Max chuckled at him, and Nikki straight up told him to shut up. Bad idea in front of Gwen's parents. Neil cleared his throat. "Um, Gwen and David were our camp counselors a few years back."
"Grandma Rosa, this is Nikki. She's my girlfriend," Max introduced. Nikki stuck out her hand to shake her's, she complied.
"Hello Nikki. I've heard so much about you. But honey, I don't appreciate you telling Max to shut up," Rosa said.
Nikki nodded. Her eyes showed extreme fear and stress.
Gwen noticed Nikki being slaughtered by her mother and she groaned. She leaned into David's ear and whispered, "Can you go save Neil and Nikki from my mom?"
"Sure," David nodded. He walked over to the couch to see Nikki looking extremely worried. "Nikki, will you go check in Max's room for your jacket? I'm pretty sure you left it in there yesterday."
"Oh," Nikki sighed with relief. "Yes, David. I'll check right now." She stood up and speed-walked into Max's room.
Max got up. "I really should help her find it." He hurried off.
Rosa turned to Neil. "You know, you kids should really refer to 'David and Gwen' as Mr. and Mrs. Green."
"Well-" Neil stopped himself. He knew he'd be in trouble if he fought this. "You're right. Thanks for the feedback ma'am."
MAX'S ROOM
"Jesus Christ, your grandma is scary," Nikki chuckled.
Max scratched his neck. "Uh, yeah. She's just old. And petty."
Nikki shrugged. "Wanna make out?"
"I mean yes, but we should probably go back out there," Max said.
"No one will notice," Nikki replied.
Max rolled his eyes. "Fine."
-
Then, Neil strolled into the room without knocking. "Shit guys, this happens every fucking time I leave you alone for five fucking seconds. You start making out."
Nikki hopped off Max. "Sorry Neil. You should know by now that you need to knock."
"Honestly, I never think about it," Neil said. "So, Max, your mom is thirty. She's an old woman. My dad is sixty."
Nikki nodded. "My mom is forty and my dad is fifty."
"Okay, I get it, you're still with your biological families," Max said sarcastically.
Awkward silence floated throughout the room. "I mean, it really do be like that sometimes," Nikki shrugged.
"Anyways," Neil cut in. "Are you guys excited for Christmas?"
"Not really," Max said.
Nikki gasped. "How can you not be excited? It's freaking Christmas!"
"Not this again," Max groaned.
AFTER THE PARTY- GWEN AND DAVID'S ROOM
"Today was the fucking worst," Gwen groaned. "I hated everything. Everyone was being terrible, and my parents didn't even fucking show!"
David put a hand on her back. "Hey, at least tomorrow is Christmas eve-"
"Hush. I want to go to sleep," Gwen complained.
David jumped on their bed. "Lie down," David gestured for her to join him.
Gwen crawled into their bed. "Goodnight. Love you."
"Happy birthday."
"Shut up."
