MAX'S APARTMENT
"I hate living," Neil sighed as he entered Max's apartment, with no sign of him coming in.
Max put his bagel down. "Why are you here, Neil? Also, I told you to start knocking when you come to my house."
"You gave me a key for a reason," Neil said smugly and dangled his keychain.
Max shot him a confused look. "I never gave you a key-"
"Anyways," Neil cut him off, "We have the US History test today. And I'm gonna do bad."
Max rolled his eyes. "You always fucking say that and you never do bad."
Neil continued, almost ignoring Max. "And I also have my calc test. I'm going to do well, but I spent all my time studying for that and couldn't squeeze in any history."
"Sucks," Max said, and continued to eat his bagel. "Honestly, if anyone is gonna do bad on the test it'll be me. I have a B minus in the class and I didn't fucking study."
"Max... why..." Neil trailed off.
Max shrugged. "I already know I'm gonna do bad. That class is so fucking hard, it's bullshit, honestly."
Neil rolled his eyes. "You'd probably have a better grade if you studied."
Max considered it, but brushed it off. "Why'd you come here anyways? We haven't walked to school since you started dating Preston."
"Preston has the flu. But I think he's faking so he won't have to take the calc test," Neil said.
"I thought he was gonna drop calc," Max tilted his head.
"Oh," Neil said, "Mrs. Alzeimer wouldn't let him. That fucking jew."
"No you," Max snapped back.
Neil nodded. "You are very right. Anyways, is Nikki coming over?"
"Uh, yeah. Probably in a few minutes? She's usually late though," Max said. Suddenly, his phone dinged. "Oh, it's Nik. She says she's walking up the stairs right now."
Neil grinned. "Great! I haven't really talked to her in a few days."
Max shrugged. "She's been really sad lately. She won't even talk to me about it."
"Maybe make some birthday plans with her. I don't think she's having a party this year, and she definitely doesn't have plans," Neil suggested, and Max's jaw dropped.
"Oh fuck. You're right, her birthday's on Sunday! I totally forgot," Max said, suddenly stressed out.
And with that, Nikki opened the door. "Hey Max. Oh, Neil. Why are you here?"
"Preston has the flu, but he's probably faking it," Max said for Neil.
"Oh. I don't think he's faking it. There is a bug going around, Nerris and Harrison both caught it," Nikki said.
Neil shrugged. "Honestly, knowing Preston, he's probably still faking it. If he was actually sick, he would've made a bigger deal out of it."
"That's true," Max responded. "We should probably head out."
They headed out of the apartment and began walking to school.
Neil cleared his throat. "So, Nikki, it's your birthday on Sunday."
Nikki avoided eye contact.
"You'll be the dancing queen," Neil joked. Nobody laughed.
Max grabbed her hand. "Nik, why're you so down?"
