During the night, I woke up feeling like someone was watching me. I rubbed my sleepy eyes and went to turn on the bedside lamp. The room flooded with light and to my surprise, no one was there.
I took a quick glance around the room. Nothing. I could've sworn I felt something. With my heightened senses, usually I wasn't wrong.
I rubbed my eyes again and turn off the lamp. I roll back over and fall asleep.
The next morning, I didn't want to get up. I wasn't a morning person and just wanted to sleep in. Zoey knocked on my door for the third time.
I groaned loudly, throwing the blanket over my head.
" I know you're in there. The headmistress wants to see you and its best not to keep her waiting," she said behind the door. She sounded irritated.
I groan and get up.
" Fine. I'm coming," I reply. I get out of bed and quickly get ready in the bathroom. After I freshen up and changed clothes, I walk out my room.
" Good morning sleeping beauty," Zoey smiles.
I growled. " Don't. I'm not in the mood."
Zoey smirked. " Who pissed in your Cheerios?"
" What?" I asked very confused. I didn't always understand human humor.
She grinned. " Nothing. Are you ready to see the headmistress?"
" Yea."
" Okay, follow me."
We started walking through the castle. It still amazed me how big it was. I felt grateful for Zoey showing me the way because I'm sure I would get lost.
We rounded a corridor and stopped at a large wooden door.
" Go right in. Don't worry the headmistress might seem intimidating but her bark is worst then her bite," Zoey says cool.
" Okay." I frowned, not knowing if that was good or bad. Zoey walks away and I enter the headmistress office.
Inside, a large mahogany desk sat in the center. Two black chairs were in front. There was a few paintings hanging on the wall. None I recognized. A woman with brown hair pulled into a perfect bun dressed in a grey dress sat promptly behind the desk. Her brown eyes staring at me intently.
" Take a seat Ms. Gilbert," she says in a professional voice.
Adrain thought it would be best to changed my last name to Gilbert. I agreed as though it seemed less suspicious.
I take a seat in front of her desk.
" You may be wondering why you're here in my office," she spoke.
I nod my head. Curious as to why I was meeting the headmistress. I thought I only answered to Master Alexander.
She leaned back against her chair, her steely brown eyes never leaving mine. " I'm the head director over the castle. I handle all of King Alexander's affairs."
" What does this have to do with me?" I asked in a calm voice.
" You see, you're King Alexander new royal slave and as his property, I have to evaluate whether you will be a good fit here."
I thought once I was choosen that was it. Now, I have to through, I look at her name plate on her desk, Vanessa Evans too. I was outraged but I knew how to control my emotions. Besides, its best never to act out in anger.
" With all due respect, your King has chosen me to be his new slave. I don't see why I have to go through you too," I reply coolly.
Vanessa grins. " Yes, I understand but you see, some slaves aren't here for the right reasons."
" And those reasons may be?"
She tsked. " Money, betrayal, assassination..., the list goes on."
My eyes widen slightly at the word assassination. Have someone tried to kill the King before? Of course they have, he's ruthless.
I swallowed loudly and faked innocence. " Surely you don't think I'm here for any of those things."
She studied me with her scrutinizing eyes. " Are you Ms. Gilbert?"
" Oh my god, no," I quickly answered.
Oh my god, yes. The hunter inside me roared.
She studied me for a second longer then leaned forward. " Good because if you were, we would terminate you."
