) prologue part II. (
ALERIE has seen the Queen suffer many times throughout her service. Not only did the child she was pregnant with at the moment she started die, she had also had numerous stillbirths and miscarriages. And if her children did survive the birth, they often did not survive a year long.
The only healthy offspring of the Queen so far, Rhaegar, did grew up very soon. He looked much like his father, yet his gentle heart was probably inherited from his mother.
Not only did her pregnancies fail many times, Aerys also got more and more abusive towards his wife. Alerie weeped in silence every time he asked for aftercare for his wife once he visited her chambers.
She always had to put the oilment on her bruises and bitemarks. She always had to see her wince once she touches one of the marks. She always had to see the broken Rhaella surviving, time after time.
This time she was again pregnant, even after having Viserys seven years ago. The Queen's body was weaker after that, she would never truly recover again. Alerie fears for the life of her Queen, who was about to give birth once again.
"My Lady, please, just lay down. You are still ill," Alerie pleads to Rhaella, who was as stubborn as a mule when she dresses herself in a dress in the colour of plums.
"I am the Queen, Alerie, I have to be at the side of my husband during court. You know that," Rhaella replies, trying to tie the laces on her back.
Lady Alerie sighs. "But the King would surely understand you are still healing whilst also dealing with your new child? He wants a healthy child out of you surely," she pleads, though she knows it was hopeless.
Rhaella was her friend for many years now and she knows that once that woman gets something in her head, she will not let anything stop her from doing it. Especially not if it is about her pride as Targaryen and Queen.
"It is not as if any child out of my body will be healthy," the Queen snarls.
That stopped Alerie from doing anything. So that was what drove her friend to these extents. She did not believe that this child would live in the first place, so she did not bother to care for her health during this pregnancy.
"My Queen, I am sorry to say this as I respect you, but that is utterly idiotic. You have birthed Prince Rhaegar and Prince Viserys and they are healthy as well! I am convinced that this child shall be born healthy and well," Alerie says.
Rhaella turns around, letting the laces fall from her hands. Her sad, pale violet eyes stare into Alerie's forest green ones.
