-Author's Note-
Here we are, the final chapter. Don't worry, you're not going to get Loki'd again. So it is with great honour that I present to you... The finale of the Eternal series. Enjoy.
I can't sleep. (y/n)'s words repeat over and over again in my head. She doesn't want me to lose my powers... but why does she want to go back to Midgard? I would love her even as she grows old and I stay young. I would love her until she dies and continue to until my soul can once again be with her. Why does she have to go? Could I still visit her? Isn't that why she's here in the first place? Because I couldn't stand being worlds away from her? She's sleeping so peacefully beside me. I wish I could rest as soundly as her. There are only a few hours before the sun rises again... when I'll have to make a choice. I smile as I remember last night's dinner. I wish I could live in that moment forever. Where we're all together, laughing and telling stories. (y/n) shuffles around in my arms and I pull her closer. The feeling of her body against mine is a great comfort to me. Maybe I can finally fall asleep now. I close my eyes and drift off, hoping that my thoughts will be clear in the morning.
"Loki," (y/n) says softly. "I brought you breakfast." I open my eyes to see (y/n) smiling down at me. I'm still in bed, how did I not notice her leaving my arms? "It's just some toast, I didn't know if you'd be very hungry or not."
"Thank you." I say, sitting up and taking the plate from her. She sits on the bed next to me, munching on her own piece of toast.
"So, have you decided?" She asks anxiously.
"Why do you want to go back to Midgard? Why can't you just stay here with me?"
"Loki, I have a life down there too. I have friends, I can't just abandon them." Yes, the mortals that she worked with. They did seem very close.
"Well then, why can't I live there with you?"
"I told you, you can't give up your-"
"What if I didn't give them up? I could live there as a god with you."
"Sure, it would be fun at first. But what happens when I get old? You don't want to waste your time with a frail old lady."
"(y/n), listen to me," I put down my plate and take her hands in mine. "No time with you is wasted. Even if I'm just watching you stare out of a window all day, I'd still love every second of it."
"Loki..." She begins, but I won't let her finish.
"No, stop trying to convince me to let you go because I won't. I can't. I'll love you for eternity and nothing will change that. No matter how much you change, you'll still be the person I fell in love with."
"Please..." I can tell that she's trying to save me from pain, but she needs to hear this. She needs to know that I can't give her up.
"Remember what you said last night? What if I'm the flower? Well, what if we're the flower? We're like a rose. I'm the thorns and you're the flower. I protect you, and you make me beautiful. If you go, then I'm just a thorn. That's all I ever was before you came into my life. All I did was hurt people, and then you showed me that instead of pain, I can bring joy. Can't you understand? I need you, (y/n)." She opens her mouth to speak, but no words come out. As tears start to roll her down cheeks, I gently wipe them away. I lean forward to kiss her but a knock at the door stops me.
"Odin wants both of you in the great hall, now." The guard shouts.
"Time to go." I smile and help (y/n) off the bed. I squeeze her hand tightly and lead her out of the room. The walk to the great hall is short and silent. As we enter through the large doors, everyone is already there. Odin sits on his throne as always, whilst Thor and my mother stand on either side. Our footsteps echo loudly as we approach the throne.
"Are you ready to make a decision?" Odin asks, his voice deep and serious. I look to Frigga, who smiles softly at me.
"Yes." I keep a firm grip on (y/n)'s hand. I never want to let her go. Everyone looks at me anxiously, except (y/n) who just looks straight ahead.
"And?" Odin raises an eyebrow. I wonder if he already knows what I'm going to say.
"I won't give up my powers." (y/n) breathes a sigh of relief besides me. "But I won't give (y/n) up either."
"Loki..." She whispers.
"I wish to stay on Midgard with (y/n), but I would also like to bring her back here from time to time."
"And what happens when she grows old?"
"I will stay by her side until her soul leaves her body. Then I shall return to Asgard if you'll allow me to." I'd understand if he wouldn't want me back here. Odin's expression seems to change. It feels like for the first time, he isn't disappointed with me. He looks to Frigga and smiles at her. It's been a long time since I've seen him smile.
"Very well." He sighs. What is this feeling? Happiness? Relief? It's overwhelming. I turn to (y/n) but before I can say anything, she wraps her arms around me and pulls me into a hug.
"I love you." She whispers.
"I love you too."
-One Year Later-
"Are we doing anything on Friday?" (y/n) asks, bouncing along next to me with her hand in mine.
"Uh... No, I don't think so. Why?"
"Frigga wants us to come to Asgard for the day, to celebrate our engagement." She lifts her hand up to admire the ring I gave her. I remember she was so excited that she said yes before I even finished the question.
"Of course, she was so happy when we first told her."
"To be honest, I thought she was gonna faint."
"I think-" I'm cut off by (y/n)'s gasp.
"Look! Look! There it is!" She squeals and pulls me towards a bookshop window. She grins widely, pointing at one of the books on display.
"Eternal Abyss by (y/n) (l/n)" I read out dramatically. "And look, what does this sticker say? Number 1 bestseller?"
"Loki..." She giggles, her cheeks going bright red.
"You know, I heard that the fans are desperate for a sequel."
"I'm working on it, come on." She rolls her eyes and pulls me away.
"I can't believe I'm engaged to a bestselling author." I know she hates it when I say things like this, but I can't help it. I'm so proud of her.
"Hey, you could be a celebrity too."
"Oh really? What could I possibly be famous for?" I chuckle and shake my head.
"Well, you could become an actor." She suggests.
"You can't be serious." Me, an actor? It's hard to imagine.
"Okay, maybe not. I don't think I could stand other girls swooning over you anyway."
"Swooning eh? Doesn't sound so bad."
"Hey, shut up." She sounds so serious, but I can't help but find it cute.
"I was joking. Come on, let's get something to eat." I grin and pull her closer as we walk.
"What are we gonna get?"
"I don't know... How about shawarma?"
"Sounds good to me."
