Warning: angst

Imagine Connor's reaction to a puppy

Sure, he's used to Sumo, but Sumo is a giant

On Connor's "birthday" (the day Hank adopted him) Hank gets him a puppy

Connor's obviously ecstatic, he loves dogs

But what he didn't expect was a golden retriever puppy the length of his forearm to stumble out of the carrier and start licking his face

Connor just fawning over the puppy

But also being scared to hurt it because it's so small

Connor also puts a blue bow on the puppy's collar

And Hank takes videos to send to everyone he knows because Connor is precious

The dog (named Buddy) grows up with Connor and Hank in their home

And Connor takes care of his baby boi like his own child

The trio (and Sumo) have the time of their lives with Buddy, frolicking and playing and being happy good boys

Until, of course, Buddy gets old.

Sumo had passed away a year earlier, and neither Connor or Hank were emotionally prepared for what happened to Buddy.

One day Hank and Connor come home from a case to find Buddy lying in his usual spot by the door, where he waits for them every day

But when Connor whistles for him Buddy doesn't even move

Connor, trying over and over again to get his dog to respond, panicks and rushes Buddy to the vet

The veterinarian says that Buddy has a tumor in his stomach that prevents him from moving due to pain, and that they have two options

Attempt a dangerous surgery to remove the tumor, or put poor Buddy out of his misery

Connor, of course, chooses the surgery, because he wants to save his dog

The surgery is successful, and the tumor is removed

But several months later, Buddy is found unconscious when Connor wakes up in the middle of the night

The vet says that the tumor had returned, even bigger than before, that another surgery is too risky, and that the best option at this point is to put Buddy down

Connor immediately asks if there's an alternative

The vet says no, and Connor immediately starts crying and hugging his dog

"I'll let you two say goodbye. Bring him to the far room when you're ready."

Connor just collapses on his dog and cries for a good few minutes

But then Buddy nudges Connor's face with his nose and licks his tears away

And Connor just pets his dog and mumbles reassuring things while Buddy continues ro lick Connor's face and tears

After ten minutes, Connor says he's ready (even tho he's really not) and Hank picks up Buddy and carries him to the room the vet said to take him to

Hank looks back to see Connor staring after them.

Connor waves a tiny bit to his dog for the last time

And Buddy lifts his paw as a goodbye

For many, many years, Connor mourns for his lost dog

One morning, twelve years since Buddy died

Connor is sitting on the couch, watching TV

And Hank covers Connor's eyes from behind.

"Don't look, Connor. I have a surprise."

"O-Okay, Lieutenant."

After a minute or two, Hank lets Connor look

And in front of him stands everybody he knows: Gavin Reed (yes, they're friends in this AU) and Caleb (the RK900 that's Gavin's partner), Markus, North, Simon, and Josh from Jericho, Luther, Kara, and Alice

But in front of them all stands Hank, grinning

And holding a squirming, snuffling golden retriever puppy with a blue bow on his collar.
