Evan Hansen started his average summer day, walking through the forest, taking in the view for forever. As he was taking his stroll, he came across the tallest tree he had ever seen. Evan had an urge to climb it, to see what the world looked like from so high up. He wanted to see the sky and feel the sun right on his face. So he climbed.

He climbed higher and higher until he felt the sun beating down on him. The cool breeze blowing through his sandy blonde hair, ruffling it slightly. He felt the branch start to lose it's strength and he quickly grabbed onto another one. He saw the branch fall. Evan then remembered who he was.

The kid with anxiety that was so crippling he chose not to eat so he didn't have to talk to the delivery guy. The kid whose only friend was really just a 'family friend' who was only in it for the car insurance. The kid whose mom is never around. The kid whose dad left when he was seven. Evan thought that he didn't have anything good going for him.

What if I hadn't moved from the breaking branch? What if I let go from this branch? Would that kill me? Would I be put out of this hell I'm living through?

Evan's thoughts were swirling, around and around in his mind. He looked down, then decided to let go. He decided that he was done living the way he was. Evan let go.

The seven second fall felt like minutes, hours even. He saw everything move around him in a blur. He just wanted to hit the ground. Then he did.

Evan was still breathing. He could move, but when he moved his arm to help himself up, he couldn't. His arm was numb, yet he was feeling all the pain in the world. The pain in his arm wouldn't cease. The pain in his mind and heart was ten times worse. He fell to die, but he didn't. He couldn't do anything right. I couldn't even kill myself correctly.

He pushed himself up with all the strength in his legs. He was standing, staring up at the tree that failed him. He erased the tree from his mind and made his way back to town.

Evan made it to the edge of the forest when he began to feel dizzy from the pain in his arm. It was limp, swinging about helplessly. As he stumbled around, he heard a voice he had heard before, but didn't recognize, calling out to him. Yelling at him to stop walking around with a daze in his mind.

Evan nearly walked right into the road, until someone pulled him by the collar of his shirt back onto the sidewalk. Evan then passed out from the pain, unable to look at his rescuer.

Evan slowly opened his eyes, before getting blinded by the bright hospital lights. Once his eyes adjusted, he saw a concerned Heidi Hansen sitting over him. "Evan, honey, thank god you're awake," his mother let out, completely relieved.

"M-mom? W-where am I?" Evan asked, baffled by his surroundings.

"You're in the hospital sweetie. You broke your arm. Do you remember how?"

Then it all came flooding back. The tallest tree, the branch, the fall, the numbing pain, and his unknown rescuer. He nodded hesitantly in response to his mother. Heidi silently urged him to go on.

"W-well I was going for a w-walk when I saw this t-tree and I just h-had to climb it. B-but then the b-branch gave way. And I uh- I f-fell," Evan lied, the lie slipping through is teeth.

His mom would hate him if she found out the truth about what happened. That he let go.
