Sobs and Screams

A week after the tree incident, Evan's first day of senior year approached. He had to leave his house for school in exactly one hour. Evan was already cleaned, combed, and dressed but he had never been more anxious.

A broken arm is sure to drag attention to him. The big, white, clunky thing on his arm that would be there for another four months. He broke his arm in several different places.

Evan sighed as he heard his mother marching her way over to his room. He opened his computer, and pretended to write a letter to himself. Dear Evan Hansen, today's gonna be a good day and here's why. He knew he had to write one eventually, but he just couldn't think of how today could be a good day.

A few moments later, Heidi walked in. "Good morning sweetie! Are you writing one of those letters to yourself?"

Evan nodded grimly in response. "You know those letters are going to help you," she pushed. "Today is going to be a good day Evan. And here's why. You can take this sharpie and ask people to sign your cast. Like an icebreaker."

Evan nodded again and took the sharpie out of his mom's hand, without a word. "I'm proud of you honey. I've gotta go. Have a good at school!" Heidi says, then rushing out of the house.

Evan sighs as he hears the door shut. He just wants his mom around, like other people do. He's jealous of other people, but he would never in a million years admit it.

After staring at his computer screen for a few minutes, he looked at the time. It was time to leave for school. Evan got up from his bed and slowly walked to school.

When he arrived, people were staring at his cast. His unsigned cast. One person, Jared Kleinman, more commonly known as the family friend in it for the car insurance, came up to him. "What did you do? Jerk off too much?" Jared asked jokingly.

Evan flushed with embarrassment and anger. "N-no I let-er- fell out of a t-tree," Evan stuttered his way through his lie.

Jared shrugged then said, "I think I like my story more. You aren't an acorn after all."

Evan stared at Jared in utter confusion. "You know, because acorns fall out of trees. God, you're clueless sometimes," Jared further explain.

"Oh," Evan said. "D-do you want to sign my cast? I mean you don't have to if you don't to. Never mind, forget it."

Evan runs off to the bathroom and into the furthest stall. As soon as he knew he was alone, he let out a soft sob. The longer he crouched in the corner of the stall, the more intense his sobs got. Tears streamed down his face to no end. Evan thought his tears wouldn't end. Until he heard the bathroom door open.

He covered his mouth to stifle his sobs and attempted to slow his breathing. The person who had walked in must not have known Evan was in there. The person began to mumble and grumble. Evan could make out things like "God, I'm such a fuck up," and "Why would you do that?"

The stranger's self-deprecating thoughts sounded like Evan's own thoughts. Then something hit him. That's the same voice as the one who saved me.

Evan heard one last statement. "What has gotten into me? I'm not this guy." Then the stranger's footsteps stomped out of the bathroom. The bathroom door was slammed behind him. Evan removed his hands from his mouth and stood up. He walked out of the stall slowly. He splashed the cold water from the old, slightly rusty, faucet onto his face. He left the bathroom and carried on his day as he usually does.

Hours later, the final school bell rang. Evan gathered his stuff slowly and began the walk home. Through the halls, he could hear Jared yelling for him, telling him he wanted to apologize. Evan didn't want to hear it. He kept walking, ignoring Jared completely.

He made it off campus and decided to take the long way home. He needed to get out of his mind. Evan couldn't stop thinking about his savior. He couldn't help but wonder who it was. He wanted to know why they thought he was worth saving. Evan didn't think he was.

He kept thinking about the occasion until he heard a loud crash from inside a house. A very large house, one might say. He stopped immediately after the crash. Evan then heard someone yell out a saddening and ear piercing scream of sadness. To top it all of he heard the same voice from the bathroom and his savior. "FUCK I CAN'T DO THIS ANYMORE!"

Evan got worried and wanted to go check out what was going on. He also didn't want to intrude and possibly make matters worse. He stood outside the house for probably ten minutes, trying to figure out what to do.

Evan decided to knock on the door. He gave a brief knock-knock-knock. There was no answer. He did it again. Still no answer. He then did something he thought he would never do. Go into someone's house uninvited.

Evan reached for the doorknob, quickly retreating his hand. He kept telling himself it was for a good reason. He grabbed the knob, turned it and pushed the door open. "Hello?" Evan called out.

No answer. He walked further into the house. Evan glanced around before hearing a thud from upstairs. He ran upstairs to the place he heard the noise. He opened a door and saw the most horrific sight he'd ever seen before.

TRIGGER WARNING

He saw a boy- a man- laying on the ground. Blood was surrounding him. Evan had never seen that much blood. While observing the scene, he let his eyes scan over the body. He saw fresh cuts on the person's wrists. He had to see if they were still alive. The blood was making him dizzy and his vision blurred. Evan knew he had to check for a pulse. As he bent down to check the pulse, he recognized who was laying in a pool of his own blood.

It was Connor Murphy.
