I sat down at the table, in between Rick and Daryl, and across from Henry. I took a breath as Carol placed a plate in front of me, then one in front of Rick, and she went down the table. It was awkward, but Henry kept his promise and kept the conversation going. It made it a little better, and whenever Henry got up to go check on the puppy - Cooper - or get more water, food, etc. Rick and Daryl made sure to continue the conversation. They felt like my two gay dads, except without the gay.
Jimmy, Ray and Jake were also at the table, joking about their times when they were drunk or times they did stupid shit. Carol repeatedly reminded them to keep the conversation PG since Judith was at the table. The other children already went to bed -they've had a long day running around in the park.
"What was that kid's name?" Ray asked me. I looked up at him.
"Huh?" I asked.
"The one who had the doll? The little girl?"
"Oh. Elianna."
"Right. Then she was shaking me awake in the middle of the night crying up a storm. She scared the shit out-"
"Raymond!" Carol hissed.
"Sorry," he mumbled. He looked at Judith. "Never repeat anything I say, okay?"
Judith smiled and laughed a little. "Okay," she responded while wearing a large smile.
"Anyways, I jumped up thinking there was something wrong. Of course Marshal and Allison were on watch, and Navy was only about 8 years old. But she woke up when I got up, and she followed behind me. Elianna pointed towards the tent, where Jason was sleeping." Ray smiled.
"No, not this story," Jimmy shook his head.
"And all we heard from the tent was-"
"Raymond. You better be sure the next thing that comes out of your mouth is appropriate." Carol hissed. Ray sighed.
"Um... Well..." Ray trailed off. He whispered something to Ezekiel, who couldn't help but crack a laugh. He hid his smile in his hand as he laughed. I smiled a little at the memory at what happened. I didn't know what it was at the time, but now that I think of it, it's a hysterical story.
"That's a bar story, Ray," I said quietly as I stood up. I grabbed my plate, put it in the sink, and then went upstairs to the room. Cooper was asleep, and jumped awake once I walked in. He looked at me, wagging his tail as he stood up on his bed, his snout looking like he was smiling. I ignored him, laying down in the bed with a small sigh. I laid on my back, my hair falling out of my face as I stared at the ceiling for a long time.
Saddiq came in.
"Ready for your check up?" he smiled as he opened up the medical kit. He took out the stethoscope as I sat up. I watched him patiently as he smiled and laughed at Cooper. Cooper had placed his snout in between two of the bars of the pen, resting it down as he sat, his butt wiggled due to his tiny tail swinging back and forth at full speed. "He's adorable, don't you think?" Saddiq looked at me as he placed the end over my heart under my shirt, listening.
I shrugged.
"You don't like him?"
"Honestly... I don't care much for him. I... I don't like how Henry got me a puppy to try to make me happy."
"Why not?"
"I don't want to take care of it. I don't want to touch it. It'll lick me and... do other gross things. It's... weird and gross and stupid and-"
"A puppy?" He raised his eyebrow as he put his stethoscope down and inserted fluids in my IV pump.
"I know I'm sounding-"
"Don't worry about it. Henry just wants you to get better."
"He's trying too hard."
"You sound like you're mad at him?" Saddiq sat down on the chair and looked at me, cocking his head.
I shrugged. "I am not-"
"You don't want to admit it. You're mad at him and you don't know why."
I raised my eyebrow, letting out a sneeze. I sniffed. "Were you a doctor or a therapist?"
"I'm right, right?" He smiled. "I studied physiology in college and in medical school. I decided to be a surgeon last minute."
"So you like read minds and stuff?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
"I can," he smiles. "What's going on is... he's trying to make you feel better and you won't except it, right?" I nodded. "Because you want to do it yourself, even though you know you can't get better by yourself. But you won't except that either."
"Can you stop? It's creeping me out. I feel like I have no privacy. I can't even be in a room by myself with the door shut. I have to leave the damn door open when I pee."
"Only if nobody is in the room. I'm here, so go ahead! Go in the bathroom and shut the door. Urinate all you want."
"Why are we talking about this?"
"You brought it up," he shrugged with a small smile. I frowned as I looked down at the IV pump, just as screams were heard from downstairs.
"Daryl!" Carol screeched. Saddiq pulled the IV tube from my arm and put the fluids away.
I stood up and followed him out of the door, and downstairs to see Henry passed out on the ground, along with Daryl bleeding from his side, and Marshal laying on the floor, arrow in his chest. His eyes were open, but dead. I gulped, looking at Henry as I ran towards him, falling onto my knees as Saddiq went to Daryl. Henry's head was bleeding, and his eyes were twitching quickly, which followed by his fingers, his hands, his arms, it kept spreading.
"Saddiq," I mumbled, releasing my hands from his skin as I backed up, looking at Henry's legs that started to twitch. "He's seizing."
