Brandon's POV
After she said those words her body dropped to the ground and for a good minute I could not move. She was locked in her own body and I had no way to know if my plan would work, it wasn't even much of a plan, per say.
I pulled out the wolfsbane and injected her with it, hoping that even the best of our kind would have the same weakness.
I took her limp body in my arms and walked back to the house, trying to avoid pack members who nodded in my direction.Mom, can you clear the house for a while? I have an urgent-
Sure honey. My mother was quick to reply, I didn't think much about it. My mind was already crowded with thoughts regarding my conversation with Kiara after weeks. What would my mark do? The powers she possessed would make it essentially impossible to get close, let alone bite her.
The necklace was burnt to the crisp yet I carried it in my pocket in fear of it unleashing the unknown.I entered an empty house when I felt Kiara move in my arms, alerting me.
My next actions were more of reflex than calculated moves, years of dealing with the enemies of the pack somehow made me emotionally detached for what I had to do next.
With a highly questionable notion, I found myself in our bedroom with Kiara handcuffed with silver to the bedpost, I sure wished it was for a different situation.I was banking on the wolfsbane to hinder her magic and strength, just enough to get me through before I come up with a solution. I contemplated the thought of calling Jacob for help but the time I would spend explain these things to him would cost me more.
After what felt like hours I managed to retrieve the witch book from its hiding spot. Kiara or most likely the auric wolf didn't want me to get my hands on it, something I had noticed over the days. Every time I came in the room, she'd take the book and leave. After a lot of snooping around, I figured she took the book to the attic and buried it under one of the wooden planks.
"Find anything worthwhile, mate." An unfamiliar voice sneered along with the sound of metal brushing against each other.
"You think some poison and cuffs will stop me?!" I looked dead in her eyes, Kiara wasn't there anymore, no trace of her was left in the body. What surprised me more was how even her face seemed to have changed with her character. She fought against the chains on her legs and I heard her hiss with pain. I kept repeating that the woman in front of me wasn't my mate yet the body was still hers. Each scar that marked her pale skin felt like knife stabs through my heart.
"Here's the thing, you can struggle to your hearts desire, really, I'm not planning to get the keys any time soon." I wished my eyes were cold, I hoped my face didn't give away my restlessness."You have some guts, I'll give you that. Going against the moon goddess' wish." She spoke in growls, her harsh voice bouncing off the walls as I glanced through the book. I was sure that there was something in it which could help, which was why she wanted me away from it.
"They don't write fairy tales in that, honey." I felt sick by the way the monster in my mates body spoke.
Yet I smirked at her weakened state, "Scared I'd find something?" The answers were hiding some where in the pages before me.
"Only your doom." Her dark chuckles filled the silence but something else had got my attention. The ending page of the book unlike the others didn't have notes, but the words that gave me some hope.
The answer is beyond your eyes,
In the price of blood the key lies .
A book torn into two
One pure and one untrue.
The first is what you seek.
A mate bond which isn't weak,
Succeed before her mark fades,
For after that she'll see no daysWhat exactly was the need for all of it to be written in riddles beats me. If a warning was what she wanted to give, drawing a danger sign beside it would've sufficed.
The clan symbol was embedded at the corner of the page, it looked like a seal but striking white.
I scrutinised it, running my fingers over the raised surface and I knew what I had to do next, well, I assumed I knew.
I bit into my wrist and held my bleeding hand over the side, my blood coloring the page red.I blinked frantically when the scene before me changed. I was no longer in the comfort of my own bedroom instead I saw a girl with striking red hair running bare feet in the snow. It looked like a village, one I knew I had visited before but couldn't quite put my finger on. I could smell something burning and the distinct stench of blood, perhaps my own.
The place looked like it was a victim of plaque, cold and untouched by human.
A book quite similar to the one in my hand was pressed hard against the girl's bosom as she glanced back frequently. She ran towards me in the deserted village, not a soul walked the street. The night sky made it harder to see what frightened the petite red head. I could make out that her dress was in tatters, the white fabric coloured with her blood.
She was crossing me when she felt my presence, it made me wonder if I was truly there or only a ghost.
"It worked." She gasped, letting out a breath of relief but her eyes still not quite looking at me but more in my general direction."You haven't got time, my dear one. The book you hold isn't what it was meant to be, this-" She offered me a look at the book that was held in her hands, an exact replica of the one I had come to dread, "it is the one that will set her free. The super moon is close, the auric wolf will-" The scene shook between her talk, she looked over her shoulder a bright light nearing.
"No, no!" I attempted to catch her attention, seeing the surroundings flicker, "how do I reach her?"
"Bite her wrist, be ware, each bite and she'll come back different." She kept looking out for whoever that followed.
"Find my body, a red cross will guide you. Find this book and remember the moon goddess is against your works." Her voice started to fade, the last words echoing constantly.
"You haven't got time." I heard her blood curling scream, her warnings and the strong metallic smell that flooded my scenes, burning my nostrils.I jerked back to reality, the book falling near my feet. Yet even with the switched scenarios, I couldn't shake away the her screams. And that coming from me is something, if I say so myself.
"How was fairy land? That witch have any kind words?" Her words were calm now, a wide smirk on her face. I returned the gesture and picked up the book. I could see through her facade, she wanted me to reveal what I saw, what I knew.I flipped back to the page that was no longer stained with my blood but had two lines written in red.
The oldest grounds are where I find peace,
Come soon, and bring with you the beast.
I finally understood why I recognised the village, why the red cross will guide me. The oldest grounds were dangerous territories, rumoured to exist in the darkness, away from the light the moon goddess bestowed upon us wolves.
The place matched the images we were taught from, it was considered forbidden lands. It made sense, the witch had to hide from the moon goddess and the only way to do that was to go to a place she couldn't reach. Looked like I was up for one hell of a road trip.I looked up at the woman I called my mate, her face frozen.
"What did she reveal?" Her voice was shaky, a contrast to the boastful words she was spitting a few minutes before.
"Looks like we're going for couple's therapy, babe."
