Kiara's POV
The day I packed all my bags and stood at the airport terminal was a gloomy one. The sun was hidden behind the grey clouds and the cold breeze was chilling every single bone under my three layered coat. The flight was to leave in another hour and with every ticking minute my heart seemed to beat faster.
Both mom and dad had deemed this occasion worthy of their presence and settled for coming to bid goodbye to their only daughter.
My mother's eyes shone with tears as she held out my hand bag at the departure terminal."Take care, honeybee." My father mumbled in my ear, patting my back in reassuring strokes.
My mother choose a much more dramatic goodbye with words of encouragement and a whole lot more with promises. Ones that my mate was burdened to fulfill.I smiled at the couple one last time as I took my bags and entered the warmth of the airport.
The entire place was littered with Christmas decorations with families all huddled with counting members mirroring a scene from home alone.
Little boys and girls were dressed in red, white and green sweaters and wore smiles traveling from one cheek to another.I felt home sick even before I left, Christmas was a time we always made a point to spend together. Come whatever, and now I was about to spend new year's away from them as well, though, mom assured me that my mate was two steps away. As if.
The plane ride was uneventful, with only a few crying babies I refrained from glaring at. Don't get me wrong, I love children, but when they are drooling and leaning over me to burst my eardrums- my opinion is biased.
The moment the plane neared my destination, I realized I had a complete three hour sleep, crying kids and all.I had insisted that they let me take a cab to the pack borders and reach on my own but they refused. My Aunt promised that she would be awaiting my arrival with a huge placard and I wasn't disappointed.
Aunt Alvina along with a glowing Fiona stood with a chart big enough to make the latter seem like an apple beside a tree. The older woman had cut her hair short which made her already oval face stand out more, outlining her cheek. Fiona looked nothing different apart from the obvious pregnancy.
"Kiara!" Aunt Alvina squealed recognising me almost immediately as she tugged at the end of the white paper and pulled me into a hug.
"Aunt Ally." I whispered falling into familiar arms and a scent that reminded me of the old days.
"Mum, let her breathe." Fiona snickered as her mother's arms around me seemed to tighten.
I side hugged the pregnant woman, congratulating her on the upcoming arrival then we all boarded the car."Uncle Clay!" I smiled, having no problem figuring out who the designated driver was.
"Good to see you, kiddo." He greeted, a fatherly glint in his eyes.
The journey back we spent catching up on all I had missed out on for five years, in between our talks, a name popped up; Brandon. Apparently he too had- by choice- left to search for his mate. I wouldn't lie, it was disappointing for I would've loved to meet him. A talk between us was long overdue.
"Spend New years with us, Kie." Fiona suggested, her hand rested nonchalantly on her stomach.
"I'm n-"
"Obviously, she'll spend it with us, there is no question about it." My darling Aunt interrupted. I wonder what my mother would have to say to that.
We entered the pack territory as a strong wave of nostalgia stung my heart, I recalled playing in those woods. I distinctly remembered the feel of my first kiss under the willow tree.
Apart from a few advances in technology, nothing seemed to have changed. It felt like I had stumbled into my past. Each path told a story, from the place I first learnt how to ride a bike to the place I attended my first school party.
The car came to a stop at a house which I oddly spent most of my life in, playing hide and seek to stealing a few kisses when no one was looking.
The Beta house stood in all it's glory, a few blocks away from the pack house, and diminutive as compared.I carried my bags till one of the helpers took them from me with a smile.
"Jane!" I squealed, hugging the old lady who I had learnt all my baking from.
"Good to have you back, Baby Ki." I had accepted long back that the kind woman before me would stick to that name no matter how embarrassed it'd make me feel. She still smelt like cookies and her smile warmed my heart.
"You can settle in on the first floor, I'll take you. It's about time for supper so freshen up." Aunt Alvina ushered me up the stairs.
As I reached up the stairs, a faint scent deviated my attention."Where are you going?" Her voice drowned out as I had entered a world of my own, looking up the mahogany stairs as my wolf shifted in my head.
Aria, what is it? I asked since my wolf continued to stir discomfort in my being.I'm not sure, but it's pulling me closer. She replied dubiously.
"Kie?" My Aunt pulled me back to the ground as she shook my shoulders.
"What's up there?" I asked, I never entered past the second floor in the three storied villa.
I knew if I climbed the next ten steps I'd be greeted with a game room and theater, I had been there before, yet it was the third floor that had always been a mystery.
"The theater and-" I shook my head as my Aunt started with a frown on her face.
"The next one." I muttered, looking at her curiously.
"Now it's the office and Brandon's room." She explained, her frown deepening.
When she uttered the name I realized what the matter was, my wolf couldn't help sense his scent, we had spent so much time in each other's presence it must've been engraved in her memory. Now that our senses have matured, it probably all came crashing back with renewed feeling.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to sound crazy, my wolf has been running in circles." She only nodded and tugged at arm towards the guest room.
"Here you go, towels and toiletries are all in the bathroom."
I took in the room as she left me, the curtains were a rich red, a stark contrast to the cream bedsheets and off-white cupboard.
The bathroom door was the same mahogany wood as the rest of the house and it opened into a spacious bathroom for one with a shower cabinet.
I washed my face, rubbing off the make up I had lathered on today and patted in dry with a crimson towel.
I entered the room yet again to collect a new set of clothes to change into, my suitcases were neatly placed at the foot of the double queen size bed on the carpeted floor.
The shower felt like heaven after a day spent in the same grimy clothes.
The hot water fell on my back relaxing my aching muscles and giving me some time to think. It wasn't my plan to stay here but five years was a lot of time to catch up on.
And after that warm welcome, it would be disrespectful to leave yet I know my mother would disagree to it all and insist on me leaving.
So, I did the right thing and dialed their number."Hey, honey, did you reach the pack?" I let out a sigh I didn't even know I was holding.
"Yeah, Aunt Ally left no room for doubt that I would spend new year's here." There was a pregnant pause after what I said.
"Kiara, you need to shift packs and look about. The more ground you cover, the faster you'll find him."
"Mom, maybe I should stay here for a while. If fate has it, it'll find a way to make us meet."
"I'll talk to Alvina."
"Mom, you aren't listening."
"You need to con-"
"Mom!" I exclaimed, "stop it." I hung up right after, massaging my forehead.
How completely unnecessary.
